SMITH, Rev. Alexander (b. 1811) -- seeking info on ancestors of
« on: Monday 18 April 05 04:28 BST (UK) »

Am seeking ancestors of Rev. Alexander Smith b. 1811 in Aberdeen, d. 06-Sept-1886. He was married to Clementina Cobban (b. 1813 d. ?), also of Aberdeen, daughter of James Cobban and Christian Paul.  Alexander Smith is my paternal GGGF.  I have a long ancestry for the Cobbans but have hit a brick wall with the ancestors of Alexander Smith.

Rev. Alexander Smith received his M.A. from the University of Aberdeen and in 1842, after a short period as assistant to Rev. Lindsay at Inverarie,  he moved to the Orkney Islands.  A church at Rendall becoming vacant at around that time, he was elected minister and continued there until 1870 when he was transferred to Kirkwall.  In early 1886 when he became paralysed and was confined to his house.  At the time of his death he was survived by four sons and five daughters, with two daughters and two sons having pre-deceased him.

I have limited information on his children (mostly just birth dates) and would appreciate any assistance also with their other details.  My line comes through George b. 26 Jun 1846 who moved to Australia via Fiji and d. in 1933 in Chatswood, N.S.W.  I believe the other children were Connie, James, Margaret, Mary, Hannah, Ebenezer, Clementina, Frances, Charles and one unknown male. All were born in the Orkney Islands.

With thanks in advance for any assistance.

Many thanks. Kenjo. It's great to get an additional generation. No, I don't have the death certificate for Alexander ... I got the info from a transcript of a newspaper cutting announcing his death in Aberdeen.  Your list of his children sorted out a couple of anomolies in my list, so thanks for that too. My line runs through George (b 26 Jun 1846) who moved to Australia after many years as a merchant in Fiji.

Hello DavidGS,

This is a few years down the track from your last post, so hope I can still reach you.
I am a descendant from James Smith, son of Alexander. I am hoping to find some info on Hannah Swan Smith. I cannot find a death record anywhere.
If you get this please reply and I can help with any more info that you might still need.

Kind Regards,
Tamsin

Hi Tamsin:

All I know of Hannah was she was born 28 Dec 1849 Hannah Swan Smith but christened as Hannah Stoner Smith at the Evie and Rendall Kirk (Alexander's Church), Orkney Islands, Scotland on 14 Feb 1850. I don't have any information on her death or her family, if she married.

I would really appreciate any information on your branch of the family. All I know of James is he married a Woolnough and died in Sydney after a long career in Fiji (as did my g-grandfather, his brother George), but I have no info on James' descendants.

Hello there

James Cobben Smith married my 2xG Grandfather's older sister, Annie Butler Massey.

This is the record from the Shetland Times:  "At St Margaret’s Church, Whalley Range, Manchester, on the 11th inst., by the Rev. Frederick Birch, B.D., JAMES COBBEN SMITH, of Levuka, Ovalau, Fiji, second son of the Rev. Alexander Smith, M.A., Kirkwall, Orkney, to ANNIE BUTLER, eldest daughter of J. R. HOCKNELL, Moss Side, Manchester.  (Shetland Times 22/6/1874)".

The marriage is also noted in the Hocknell family bible, although with some spelling mistakes (eg Cotton for Cobben).  There is no further information about James, except that they had a daughter Edith Violet Massey Hocknell.

Annie died on 8 June 1876 at Auckland, NZ and was buried at Auckland CofE Cemetery in Auckland on 9 June 1876.

I would also like to find out more about James and his life and family 'down under'.

Annie's father was a merchant travelling frequently between NSW and Liverpool and other siblings were born either at sea, in Australia or eventually settled there.

Hi Penny;

Thanks for the info ... I didn't know James Cobban SMITH was married before, but it makes sense.  I've incorporated the info you provided into my records and here's what I know about him.  Interesting that the spelling became Cobben as the name would have come from Rev. Alexander's wife, Clementina Cobban d. of James Cobban (1767-1849).

BTW, James' younger brother George was my great-grandfather through his 2nd marriage to Alice Morey (his first marriage was to her sister Mary Ellen or Emmiline but she died soon after).  George was also, like James, a merchant in Fiji for many years.

If you want to contact me directly for more info, please do. My email address is (*)

Regards,
David

------

James Cobban SMITH
b. 4 June 1842 Rendall, Orkney, Scotland
d. 25 June 1904 Burwood, Sydney, N.S.W., Australia

James initially migrated from Scotland to Victoria in the 1860's, but was soon persuaded to move to Fiji to grow cotton. He settled there on the island of Taviuni where he entered into partnership with Mr. J.H. Peterson. Taviuni is an island just east of Vanua Levu.  This lasted less than a year, and James was on his way back to Australia when he was persuaded by Rev. William Moore to remain in the islands. He formed the firm Moore and Smith with the Rev's son Marshall, of Levuka, merchants.  When W.M. Moore decided to devote his attention to cotton, the firm became J.C. Smith and Co. and remained so for many years. (Source: The Cyclopedia of Fiji, McCarron, Stewart & Co., Sydney 1907 reprinted by R. McMillan, Papakura, NZ 1984)

James was first married to Annie Butler, eldest daughter of J. R. Hocknell of Moss Side, Manchester in June of 1874. The marriage is noted in the Hocknell family bible, although with some spelling mistakes (eg Cotton for Cobben).  They had a daughter Edith Violet Massey Hocknell. Annie died on 8 June 1876 in Auckland, NZ and was buried at Auckland CofE Cemetery in Auckland on 9 June 1876.

James remained in the South Pacific and went on the assist with the formation of the first government of Fiji and held the post of Treasurer, with Cakoban as King, but the life of that Government was short and Mr. Smith did not again enter public life until abbexation and the arrival of the first Governor of Fiji, Sir Arthur Gordon (now Lord Stanmore), under whom he served in the Legislative Council for many years up to his departure for Australia.

Relations with the British Consul were not always good though. In one official report (dated 1871) the example of the “Nukulau”, a ship that had sailed without consular clearance, is cited to illustrate the difficulties under which he was working: “I mentioned the matter to one of her owners, Mr. J.C. Smith of Levuka, a Minister of this so-styled government. He averred that he was no longer a British subject, having taken the oath of allegiance of Thakambau, and that as the period for which the provisional certificate under which the Nukulau was sailing had expired, he considered her a Fijian vessel”. (Source: OCEANIA Ports & Havens, http://www.janesoceania.com/oceania_patteson/index.htm)

Afterwards, he finally settled in Sydney and married Miss Woolnough, daughter of the senior partner in the firm of Horace Woolnough and Co., warehousmen. He entered into commercial partnership with Mr. Morgan and build up the business Morgan and Smith.

James also acted as agent for the Government of British New Guinea up until his death, and was a director of the So. British Insurance Co. (Source: Newspaper clipping of Obituary held by David Godfrey-Smith, published unknown). Death record number 4936/1904 in N.S.W. BDM.

Hello

Had a very quick skip through this thread and can see no mention of a will.  The Rev A Smiths will - 13 pages - a lot of which will be legalese - is available for download from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk as ref no.  SC11/38/12

'Rev., retired Minister, King Street, Kirkwall, sometime of the Congregational Church, Rendall, Orkney, afterwards of said Church, Kirkwall, d. 06/09/1886 at Kirkwall, testate' - there is aslo a 'Confirmation', whatever that is, also available for download.

Cost £5 for each.  you'll have to register which is free -- then can pay using a debit or credit card - buying the items in a basket as you would with Amazon etc.

Good luck.  Regards,    Steve   :O)

Helen;

I have a family tree for Rev. Alexander SMITH; his son George was my great-grandfather. I'd be happy to send you what information I have. You can reach me by email (*) ... I am away from home at the moment but back in early July and can dig through my files then.
