What's in a name?
« on: Monday 18 April 05 08:15 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
Just musing on the name my grandfather was born with. His mother never married and at five his mother died and his grandmother brought him up. On his birth certificate he was named Noel Laten Maxwell. Later his grandmother or himself (depends who you ask) changed his name to Roy Noel Laten Maxwell. Just wondering if any of these names could hold the key to who his father was? Was his father's surname Laten? or was his first name Noel? Is Laten a common name? I found a family in Surrey with the surname Laten but he was a father with a couple of little kids. And not knowing the area could be miles out from where my lille Ethel was. Still makes you think.

Hi Roseanne

Yes, it certainly does make you think and could turn out to be just the clue you are looking for as it was sometimes quite common for illegitimate children to be given the surname of their father as a second forename.

Best wishes

Still this far on I guess it will always be just one of those mysteries and secrets that went to the grave with the persons involved. Still it would be great to have a time machine or something, don't you think?
