Place help - Kingston Restoy
« on: Monday 18 April 05 14:05 BST (UK) »

Any ideas where Kingston Restoy/Rectoy, Berkshire is? It's down as a place of birth on the 1871 census. In 1881 it just says Kingston.
Any help appreciated

Could you post some details i.e. persons name and birth year it might allow a bit more digging.

Thanks for replying.

The name in question is James Burchell who was the father of Florence Burchell.
On her marriage certificate (1904 Coln St Aldwyns) his name is James Holliday Burchell and a retired policeman. We have a birth certificate for Florence Christiana Burchell showing her place of birth as Medway Street, Westminster and date 6.5.1874,father James Burchell, policeman, mother Elizabeth Burchell formerly Daniels. Looking on FreeBMD and 1837 O/L there is that birth but also a death age 2 in 1876. Her death certificate  for 1954 gives her age as 78 so I think that isn't the right birth certificate for the Florence I'm looking for.
On 1871 there is James Burchell - police constable  born about 1843. Details of that one are:
London/St John The Evangelist/St John Westminster. Page 73, 7th line down.
On 1881: London/St John The Evangelist/District16. 2nd line down. RG11/113. Florence shows up age 4 on there.
I can't find either James or Florence on 1891 but can find James on 1901 in St Giles Tetsworth, S Oxfordshire RG13/1373 with wife Frances (ties up with witness name on marriage certificate)
Congratulation if you have managed to get this far as most of it has nothing to do with Berkshire(!) but any pointers would be much appreciated.

I'm not sure that this helps much:

1891

St John the Evangelist Westminster

93 Vaux? Bridge Road

James BURCHELL head mar 41?? police sargeant 26 A b.Kingston Berkshire
Julia wife 47? b.Himminghall? Norfolk
John SARGEANT lodger unm 33 master at St Peters College b.Attlebrough? Northamptonshire

Rg12/79 folio 123 page 67

Is there an address for Florence on her 1904 marriage certificate?

Hi, thanks for your replies.
The 1891 census reply is great, I tried all sorts of Burchell combinations but not that one! Another wife, I didn't know about this one.
The marriage in 1899, there is a Frances Scrutton on the same page, one of the marriage witnesses was Frances Burchell and James' wife on 1901 census is Frances.
The only 1901 Bucks death I can find is an Edward in Eton. My mum has a diary of sorts that belongs to Florence. There are 2 'dad died' entries. One 4.12.1911 is her FIL so presumably the other 24.2.1909 would be her father. There is a death Mar 1909 for James Holliday Burchell age 66 which would tie up with a Jun 1842 birth.
There isn't an address on Florence's marriage certificate, it just says residing in Coln St Aldwyns and she was 27.

I think that your Kingston is probably Kingston Bagpuize as I have found a James Holiday Burchell birth as follows:

1842 Jun Qtr
Abingdon
Vol 6 Page 134

Having looked at the 1871 image, I wonder whether it actually says Kingston Rectory ??

Casalguidi - shame it wasn't that one, it would have been the closest place to me and I could have had a wander over there. Never mind.........
