Useful information


When searching for your Hampshire ancestors, the following information may be useful. 

1841 Census

S&N Genealogy/British Data Archive (http://www.BritishDataArchive.com) have now released CDs of scanned images of the original enumerators’ books.
S&N are accepting advance orders for the index. (December 2005)

An index and the images are available online from Ancestry (http://www.ancestry.com ) – this is a subscription service.  There is a link from the National Archives site to Ancestry’s index, which can be searched free: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census/?source=ddmenu_search1

An index and the images are available online from FindMyPast (http://www.findmypast.com/CensusChooseSearchType.jsp) - this is a subscription service.  The index can be searched free.

1851 Census

Hampshire Genealogical Society have produced an index of this census in book/fiche form – it runs to to 67 volumes.  Some of the books are now out of print and the volume is available on fiche only.  Please check this page: http://www.hgs-online.org.uk/hgs_pub_1851.htm

S&N Genealogy/British Data Archive (http://www.BritishDataArchive.com)  are now accepting advance orders for CDs of scanned images of the original enumerators’ books, but will only produce it if enough orders are received.

1891 Census

Index of 1891 Census for Hampshire (excluding the Isle of Wight) has been published on CD-Rom  by Hampshire Genealogical Society:

The Isle of Wight has its own index, also published by HGS.

1901 Census

The index can be searched at the National Archives site: http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/  Images can be downloaded for a fee.
