Hi, Everyone, I have recently come across the AMPHLETT name used as a forename in an ancestor I am chasing up, William Amphlett Dyson, who was in the Manchester area of Lancashire in the late 18th/ early 19thC. When searching through the freebmd site I notice that this name occurs almost exclusively in Worcestershire. Is anyone researching this surname, or has come across it in their own trees; or might someone know of an Amphlett individual who might have migrated pre late 18thC. to the North-West of England. A bit of a shot in the dark, I realise... Keith

Just a rider to yesterday's posting, but on familysearch.org I discovered baptisms for both a William Dyson and a William Amphlett in Bromsgrove in the 18th century, so perhaps there is some kind of link there... Keith

Hi Keith,
There were also Amphlett's in Gloucestershire in 1960/70's, migration from Worcestershire perhaps.
Regards
Susan

From website of Gloucestershire Orchard Group
(Conserves, promotes and celebrates traditional orchards in Gloucestershire)
Judge Amphlett Named after a famous Worcestershire assize courts judge, this is a heavy cropping, early harvesting variety (of pear).
Now you've got some research to do!!

I put 'Amphlett' in as a forname in the ancestry.co.uk search engine - came up with the 8 matches for Lancashire

Thanks again, Sue, I've never thought of trying that - I'll have a go myself now and see who those 8 individuals are... And Arranroots, It's the first time that I've realised that Family Trees might involve pears - unless of course we're talking Family History Conferences... Keith

I have a Mary Amphlett who was christened in 1766 in roseley, Shropshire not Worcestershire. She married Edward Brown/e in Shropshire.

Jade, Thanks so much for responding to my query - this is the first reply on this thread for over 4 months, and I was wondering whether it was all dying a death. Your Mary Amphlett would have been born at the right time to fit in with the Dyson family - I don't suppose she married again after tying the knot with Mr Brown/e? I see on another posting that your are researching the AMPHLETT surname - do they ever stray into Lancashire? William AMPHLETT Dyson was apparently born at Ashton-Under-Lyne in 1795, though the only possible baptism I have found for him so far is for the same year at Manchester Cathedral. And welcome to Rootschat, by the way! Very best wishes, Keith

Hi MJB
How sure are you that her first name is Amelia? This was often shortened to Milly and there is a Mildred AMPHLETT that would fit in Gloucester in 1901. Ref RG13/2430 197 30.
She is one of several sisters - let me know if you would like the details.
kind regards, Arranroots

Since making the first post a few hours ago I have searched Mary Amphlett's family back to the 1670's. None of my Amphlett ancesters strayed out of Broseley, but as for their dscendents I dont know. I am going to search more on this tomorrow, to see if I can make some connection.
