This is all a bit vague. " ish " is an imprecise terminology allowing maybe twenty years either direction.
I have a couple of queries which may assist in pointing the search in the right direction

What is the religious persuasion of the family ?
It appears you have some info about Betty. Would that include her DOB ?

The only Samuel Gilbert I have found to date came from Thornfall, Kilwaughter, Co. Antrim and he is shown as having signed the Ulster Covenant 1912 http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/ulster_covenant.htm

One of the librarians at Larne Library might do a directory look up in order to obtain a more precise date -

Larne Library, 36 Pound Street, Larne. Co Antrim BT40 1SQ
Telephone: 028 2827 7047 Fax: 028 2827 7047

the reason that i have put ish is that we are not to sure.  as using my mothers memory and as she is 82 she is uncertain.      SAM Gilbert's wife   Elizabeth (Betty)  was born in Scotland  1883/4  to a Mary little  and we believe christened  Elizabeth armstrong little..      cannot find her marrying in Scotland but she is the mother of a Sam and Kenny gilbert.      the only other info we have is Kenny was a teacher ? at Belfast univ (again  old lady's mind   he poss taught art)    as for religion   don't know.

According to IGI, there was a Samuel Gilbert born 26/7/1866 at Larne to a Sarah Gilbert.  If you know that 'your' Sam was quite a bit older than his wife then this is a possibility. The name Samuel Gilbert also appears in Killwaughter and Larne in the 1820's and 30's - these may be ancestors of your Sam. Will post again if I find anything else.

Adrian,

It should be possible to find some information about Kenny. Colleges, schools and universities tend to publish registers which mention staff and students.

I tried NI Libraries online catalogue for a register for Queens University, Belfast but had no success there. You say Kenny possibly taught art. My mother studied art in late 1920s - early 1930s at the College of Art in the Belfast Technical College.

Would the time frame that Kenny was teaching be 1920s to 1960s ?

Best Wishes, Christopher

A Samuel Gilbert was my Great Grand Father and he was from Larne but I am going to have to check the information I have about him. If you have any photos of him it would help.
Do you know if he had any other children?

Hello Kellie,

I guess your Great Grandfather may have been born around 1900.  There are still some families with the surname Gilbert in Larne and the area around Larne. The Phone Book for Northern Ireland 2003 listed four living in Larne. The Central Library in Belfast were unable to offer me current phone directories. I will ask the Linenhall Library when I am next in Belfast if they have current phone directories. There used to be one Phone Book for Northern Ireland. The last one was published in 2003. We now have several, I think six, for the area. Everyone I know is holding on, like grim death, to their 2003 directory as it covers the whole area. It is much easier to do a look up in one than search through six.

I looked at www.proni.gov.uk/ulstercovenantsearch and found five people with the Gilbert surname in Larne signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912.

Rose Gilbert, Kilwaughter
Agnes Gilbert, Kilwaughter
Mrs Gilbert, 5, Poaguestown
Robert Gilbert, Larne
William Gilbert, Kilwaughter

All the Best,

Christopher

If you go to

192.com

and type Gilbert in name and Larne in place

it returns 3 telephone numbers/addresses plus indicates 21 Electoral Register entries (albeit you would need to pay to reveal addresses of the latter).

I searched the Ulster Historical Foundation Database who list all the heads of households in Larne in 1901 - the town of Larne itself just.  The only two Gilberts I could find were:

GILBERT Robert Head 42 M P Blacksmith Bank Road
GILBERT Matilda Wife 34 M P   Bank Road
