gillies - governess
« on: Wednesday 20 April 05 21:10 BST (UK) »

One of my ancestors was a governess in Kent sometime between about 1900 to 1918.
She taught the children of two families - which family when we don't know.
Is there a registry of governesses or ?? Roll Eyes household bookkeeping records of famous families?? or ??
Any help appreciated.

Hi hdr

There won't be any standard records of governesses at all.  Some large estates/important families did keep their own records and if these have been deposited they will probably be with the local county record office - catalogued under the name of the family.  Unless you know the name of the family or where she taught then it's probably going to be very difficult trying to answer this unless you find her in the census.

Do you have her on the 1901 census?

Best wishes

Hi Heather

The main archive offices in Kent:

http://www.kent.gov.uk/e&l/artslib/archives/home.html

http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/

You will need to enquire with them and/or search any online catalogue as to whether they hold any records on the families you are interested in.

You can search the 1901 census at http://www.census.pro.gov.uk

There are some Kent directories online at http://www.historicaldirectories.org

Best wishes
