Hay/Hannah
« on: Thursday 21 April 05 02:45 BST (UK) »

Hi All, I'm new to this site, and wondering if anyone could help me  with my GGgrandfather, William Hay.

Sorry if this is a bit long, but I would hate to think anyone wasted time looking for information I already have.

Found him in the 1881 census in Muirkirk, birth place listed as Kelton, Kirkcudbright.

On his 1879 marriage to Janet Burnside in Muirkirk, he has given his parents as William Hay (dec) and Jane Hay ms Hannah.  Searched IGI with this info but came up with nothing, however I found (first on IGI then looked it up on SP) William Hay (illegitimate) b3 Jan 1856, Kirkcudbright, mother Jane Hay, signed by grandmother Marion Hannah. Directly below this entry was one for a Margaret Hay (ill) mother Marion Hay signed grandmother Marion Hannah.

IGI shows marriage of Marion Hannay(h) and Alexander Hay with a number of children (some extracted, some submitted) including a Jane and Marion. So this has led me to believe that someone has made up a bit of a white lie about who his father was. Jane had other illegitimate children and I have found her death reg. signed by her son-in-law and she is listed as UM.

I think I have found him on the 1871 census, but he is out working, not with family, so this one is not a big help.

Was wondering if mayby someone could find him in the 1861 census, or give me some tips on how I could prove I have the right birth.  Also have not been able to find him after the 1881 death of his wife, when his daughter Mary (my ggrandmother) was adopted by her grandmothers sisters family.

thanks

Not sure if this helps:
James Hannay of Blairinnie m Marion Shaw of Mid Kelton (1788). They had 11 children - John, Robert, Jane, Maxwell, David, James, Agnes, wALTER, Marion, Sophia, Esther & William. Marion McDowall Hannay married Dr Alexander John Hannay of Grennan. They had 6 children - Elizabeth, Maxwell, Mary, James, Grace & William Cathcart - who married Julia Christian.

Maybe Marion Shaw, who obviously became Marion Hannay married your chap afterwards?

Thanks, Neil Hannay

Hi Neil,

Thank you for your interest, but I don't think this is the same family.  I am in touch with a descendant of Marion Hannah/y and Alexander Hay. He has done a lot of work on this line, and it does not appear to be a match.

Shall keep looking.

ta, Karen.

Just been looking at my census transcript for Kirkcudbright 1841 and found the following

Living at Union Street
HAY Marion, 25
HAY Elizabeth, 5
HAY William, 20 merchant seaman

You probably have this already - but you never know! Perhaps William was Marion's brother in law. Her husband may have been away at sea. No sign of your Jane.

Thanks Callywoods for the info.  Can't match it up with anything at the moment, but will keep it stored away just in case.

Hi Karen

Wondered if you know about a site for the Dumfries and Galloway census for 1851.  There are lots of Hannays in Dumfrieshire area.

www.dumgal.gov.uk

Hope this is a source of help for you.
