Hi,

I've found the family in the of the elder Robert in the 1861 Census for Feltham.  More siblings but no trace of Robert Junior. The complete family at 19 High Street Feltham is:

Robert Luff, 60, Baker, b. Egham
Mary, 52, Baker's Wife, Bledlow
Thomas H, 25, Baker, Old Windsor
Henry, 20, Carpenter, Old Windsor
Frederick, 18, Carpenter, Hanworth
Eleanor, 15, Afsistant?, Hanworth
Mary, 13, Feltham

As the number of siblings we've found increases I think it's increasingly likely that this is your Robert's family since eldest sons were very frequently named after their fathers in the 19th century but he was probably living outside of Middlesex in 1861.

I don't unfortunately have the 1861 census for Berkshire which is my guess as to where he was since I can't find him in Middlesex, Surrey, London, Kent or Essex.  It maybe worth a post on the Berkshire Lookups Board to see if anyone can find him the 1861 Berkshire census for you.  I don't unfortunately have access to any earlier censuses which would cover Feltham either so again it might be worth a try on the Middlesex Board for a 1851 lookup and Berkshire for 1841 lookup (The ages of the children and where they were born give a good idea of where the family most likely was in 1841 & 1851).

Will keep you posted if I find anything else.

Regards,

Allan

Allan:

Thank you so much!

Thomas is what my Robert and Charlotte named their only son!

Considering they had their first child in Feltham in 1864 (+/-), I was figuring he hadn't left Midds.  But you haven't found him, so....

I'll post on the Berks board and keep my fingers crossed.

Interestingly, Robert, Charlotte, and family lived at 21 High Street!  Gotta be the right family, no?

I'll see what I can do about earlier census look-ups.  If we can link him to the family, that'll be a huge find!

I cannot thank you enough, Allan.

Hmmm ... I was checking for brother/son Thomas on the LDS site and needed to determine his birth year.  Doing the math from his stated 1861 age, it comes out to 1836 -- Robert's birth year!

Taking into account not knowing whether or not birthdays had already occurred during the census year, it's likely either I've got the wrong family or Robert and Thomas were twins.

Knowing that my Robert had twins (my grandmother and Agnes)....

What do you think, Allan?

Hi,

I just checked the 1871 census for Thomas Luff and found him living at 12, High Street, Feltham with his wife Mary and interestingly his birthplace is down as Sunningdale on this census!  I think your hunch on Thomas as Robert being twins could be right.

I hope someone manages to turn up something for you from the 1851 or 1841 censuses.

Regards,

Allan

I can't find a census section for Sunningdale in the 1841 census (or 1851 come to that) - I assume it must be part of Windsor - but which part - does anyone know ??.

I've just found out that the Berkshire Family History Society has a surnames index for the 1851 census on its web page which gives the volume and page numbers where surnames occur.  The web address is:

http://www.berksfhs.org.uk/Census1851surnames_files/Census1851surnamesLbyvol.htm

The references for Luff are: Vol 02 Part 1, Vol 04 Part 1, Vol 09 Part 1, Vol 10 Part 1 & Vol 12 Part 1

There is also a list of parishes and the volumes that cover them (http://www.berksfhs.org.uk/berkshire/Census1851parishes.htm) Sunningdale should be in volume 12 so the last reference (in bold) is probably the best place to start looking.

Allan

Thanks so much, gentlemen!

Thanks to Pam at rootsweb.com, I have the 1851 Middx entry.  (BTW, it lists Thomas as 16 and Robert as 14.)

Harry, I believe Sunningdale would be Old Windsor, but I won't swear to it.

Allan, I had that BHS volume info, but what do I do with it?  I understand the 1841 census was weird, with ages rounded down and some other anomalies.

Why or why doesn't ancestry.com have all the censuses....
