Murphys from Mayglass Wexford
« on: Thursday 21 April 05 05:53 UTC (UK) »

I am researching Dennis MURPHY, born 3 Dec 1812 Mayglass Co Wexford son of Phillip MURPHY and Mary LAMPORT, married 26 Jul 1839 to Jane Elizabeth WHEELOCK and died 18 Nov 1895 at Woodstock, Victoria, Australia.  I am a descendant of his.

Dennis Murphy emigrated from Mayglass with his spouse, Jane Elizabeth Murphy (nee Wheelock), and family on the clipper ship 'Shalimar'.

The 'Shalimar' left the Port of Liverpool on 22 November 1854 and was on its first voyage.  It arrived in Melbourne on 9 February 1855.

The children who accompanied Dennis Murphy and Jane Murphy (nee Wheelock), according to the passengers list, were William James (13 years), Mary (10 years), Philip (7 years), James (4 years) and Jane (infant).  The family were accompanied by Christopher Jeffares/Jeffers (27 years).  Christopher was apparently a relative of Jane Wheelock, his mother's maiden name being Mary Wheelock.  Christopher Jeffers died unmarried at 60 years and is buried at the Epping Cemetery, Victoria, in the same grave as William James Murphy.

Is anyone else researching this family or can anyone help me with information or advice about them?

I think it POSSIBLE that some members of the family migrated to South America!

I am from that general area and can make some enquiries for you, if you so wish.

I would be delighted and grateful to you if you would please make some enquiries.

If this helps, I have an extract of a baptism register entry for Dennis MURPHY on 3 Dec 1812 which shows that he lived at 'Bog, Mayglass'.  Sponsors were Patrick BROWN amd Catherine FURLONG.  Dennis MURPHY married Jane E WHEELOCK and I have an extract of a baptism register entry for their son, William James MURPHY on 14 Nov 1841 which shows that he lived at 'East Bog, Mayglass'.

While Dennis and Jane MURPHY and family emigrated to Australia, I think it possible - and I emphasise 'POSSIBLE' - that some of the other MURPHYs from Mayglass MAY have emigrated to Argentina.  If you were able to either confirm or disprove that possibility it would be a great help.  ANY INFORMATION though would be greatly appreciated.

I'll do my best for you - not sure if the church records go back that far but I'll give it a go.

I don't think I can help.  You have already been in contact with people in the area and they have given you all the information that is available here.  Sorry that I can't do any more.

I'm also related to Denis Murphy and Jane Wheelock. Denis was my great-great-great grandfather. I'm decended from their oldest son William James Murphy.

William married Sarah Harrison at St Francis RC Church in Melbourne on 25 April 1865. Sarah's family having emigrated to Australia from Ayreshire Scotland in 1859.

Their 3rd child was John Harrison Murphy who married Sarah Cook at Walhalla, Victoria, on 25 Dec 1894. Their second son, Thomas, was my grandfather. My father was John Joseph Murphy, the older son of Thomas and Elizabeth Eileen Dibben who married on 15 January 1922 at St Francis RC Church in Mebourne.

My research is in the early stages and my interest is to identify my family history at Walhalla. I have no knowledge of any family connection to South America.

I live about 4km from the Epping Cemetery where William Murphy is buried and I unsuccessfully searched for his grave on 24 July 2005. I did locate the grave of his youngest son Denis Patrick Murphy who died on 1 July 1953 at the age of 70.
