Hi all, I know that there exist some poll books, some going back to the C17th which list those entitled to vote, and that these had to be Freeholders, however, here is my question.
A Freeholder was someone who owned land so, if a farmer owned his farm and land, he should be in the book??? I know that there is no guarantee all names are listed but can someone confirm the above before I purchase copies of a couple of these for Aberdeenshire and Angus.
If anyone has actually used Poll Books, it would be great to get any tips.
Many thanks Lesley

Although I've not used the pollbooks for the areas you mention I have looked at others with mixed results. Much seems to depend on the era they cover as the earlier periods limited the vote to large landowners. Later ones are better.
re the term freeholder .... its primarily an English term.

Thanks Falkyrn I suspect my lot may not have owned the amount of land necessary for them to be included, however, as the copies are not too expensive, I may order one to see if it is worth ordering the other areas. It will be an interesting glimpse into history if nothing else. Lesley
