Ernest David Stevens - Eastbourne to SA - Help
« on: Sunday 21 August 05 15:11 BST (UK) »

Hello All,

I have searched! But I still can't find any record of my GGrandfather's arrival in SA and on what ship.

He was born in Eastbourne in 1871, appears on the 1881 census as a 9 year old scholar, but not on the 1891 census.

He married a Jessie Georgina Connock in Grahamstown, SA in 1895.

I also don't have a death date for him. I know he was buried somewhere in Cape Town area before 1960.

Can anyone assist me with any of the above?  Any info would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your efforts.

Kind Regards,

Peter Groenink

Hi Peter,

I found two internet refences to a Messr. STEVENS travelling to the Cape in 1889

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Selected passenger lists from the Natal Witness for the
year 1889 - July to December
This information was kindly donated by Bernie Cramer and typed out by Coleen
Blij.
October 3                    Arrival
Moor USS Southampton, Griffin, England, Cape Ports
Passengers <snip> Stevens,<etc>
October 11      Arrival
Grantully Castle C S. S London, Young from England, Cape Ports
Passengers    <snip>Messrs <snip>, Stevens, <etc>
~~~~~~~~~~~

I don't know if you'd be able to find more detailed information on the British side for these particular vessels.  This information was published in a South African newspaper.

best wishes
