Dear Rootschatters,
This is by way of a more 'recent' inquiry and may bring to mind even a snippet of information on the following two people :
Gideon Shaw believed to have had connections to Castleford Tigers Rugby Club and his son Neville known to be a jocky also in the Castleford area.
I have made inquiries to the Club without response and I would also like to know if there were many stables in the area in 1950 and their names if possible.
And even better if anyone remembers this father and son I would love to hear from you.
Any help appreciated.

Bianca, Thank you so much for your help with this. I would really love to find out more about these two people so any information to do with them or where they worked would be tremendous.
Any possibility of checking out the rate lists in particular around 1960 for father and son, Neville Shaw may have been married to Marion Bell around this time.
I dont know what connection Gideon had to rugby clu but the printers sounds promising.
Best Wishes

Scatty, I should be visiting the library in castleford in the very near future and will see what they have. I remember the name Gideon Shaw, he was quite a prominent person in Castleford, he did own a printing firm and as for Castleford Tigers, I think he was on the board, maybe even chairman, don't hold your breath, but I WILL get back to you with whatever I find out. peter

Scatty, Article in "Yorkshire Evening News", (not now in circulation) 26-Jan-1955 with photo. Gideon Shaw, Known locally as "Mr. Rugby" was Chairman of Castleford rugby league football club from 1930 to 1957 with a break for the hostilities (WW2) his peak as chairman came in 1935 when Castleford appeared in the challenge Cup final for the first time, beating Huddersfield by 11 points to 8 at Wembley. another high spot was 1939 when they reached the championship at maine road, but lost to Salford, he also guided them to victory as Yorkshire League winners in 1932-33 and 1938-39. he also had a spell as President of the club. he also managed the successful Great Britain team in the world cup. There's also a photo of him in "Pontefract and castleford Express" dated 22-aug-1985 page 8. His obituary appeared in "Pontefract and Castleford Express" dated 27 Jan 1966, page 6, (available for viewing on M/F). He was indeed the owner of a printing business in Castleford, his Father, also called Gideon was also a business man. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything about Neville. The nearest "Big" professional stables are in the Wetherby and Malton areas
Hope this has helped, peter
