Hi Cass
He was a soldier - gunner in the Royal Artillery but as to why he was there
It might be worth enquiring with the Cornwall record office to see if they have any records of prisoners at Bodmin for this time period:

Best wishes

Hello Krissy!
Just came across your posting and hope you don't mind my asking you a few questions as you seem to have been doing some research on the Bodmin gaol.
I am interested in researching two hangings that happened there in 1791 and 1795. Not sure yet if the persons involved are connected to my family - one a villain and the other a victim - but surnames have caught my attention. James SYMONS was hanged and Sarah JANE was robbed. I had family members living in,and near, Bodmin during these years with these surnames.
Can you tell me if it is possible to find any information about a prisoner and their trials? Where do I begin? Any suggestions please?
Cheers from Australia.

If you go to
http://www.a2a.org.uk/
and enter "bodmin gaol" in the search criteria you will find a large number of records. Most of these are for individual prisoners but there is certainly evidence that at one time it was a naval prison. Maybe it was a military prison as well.
"bodmin jail" produced further entries but I didn't try "bodmin prison"

Hi David and Krissy!
Thought I'd check the email just before heading to bed. Very happy to have heard from you both. Thank you both for the information you have posted.
David, I followed the link and will try to contact the CRO tomorrow.
Krissy...Seems rugged to be hanged for stealing an ox. Given the times, transportation, but execution! JANE is Sarah's surname. A common misunderstanding. I think my mother was glad to change her surname when she married! She used to get frustrated, as a child, trying to convince adults she wasn't being difficult by refusing to give her surname!!! The James Frederick mentioned is the one I am referring to in my posting.
I would appreciate your passing on any information as you come across it and I will reciprocate, if I come across anything from here in Australia.
Again, thanks to you both.
Cheers
Elsie Ellen
