I have an ancestor who was innkeeper at the Farmers Arms,Abergavenny in 1871. Can anyone tell me what became of this establishment?

Best wishes

Hi Pete,

Try abergavenny farmers arms in Google.
It seems like at least one Farmers Arms is still in business, in or very near Abergavenny.

Can you pin-point it more exactly Huh

Hi Bob, I have seen the one at Cwmdu, which looks well worth a visit, being a pub, but not the one I'm looking for. According to Slaters 1868, the Farmers Arms in Abergavenny was located in Lion Street.

Best wishes

Google with abergavenny "farmers arms" "lion street"

gets you:
http://www.pubmasters.co.uk/display.php?id=13120  with what may or may not be a photo of the pub Huh

Hi Bob - excellent site, should repay further study! The lack of photograph, and no contact details, does make me wonder if the pub is no more, especially as the Farmers Arms doesn't figure on any other pub sites- as far as I can see.

Best wishes

Hi Pete,
Suggest you email the local museum. Bridport museum were able to help me out with a now closed pub there - they even provided a photo. Regards Jan Wink

Yes, that's a good idea, I remember that the museum in Abergavenny Castle had a display of photo's of the pubs a while back, maybe the curator could help you out.

I would confirm that the Farmers Arms still exists. It is on the corner of Market St. and Lion St. in Abergaevenny.I know that in 1922 the proprietress was a E Phillips.

There is a photograph in "old Abergavenny in Photographs" written by Albert Lions.

Hope this helps.

Glad to hear it is still going - I hate it when pubs shut! Thanks everyone for your information and suggestions.
