Mansons from Thurso
« on: Friday 22 April 05 18:42 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find the Parent of William Manson born 14 Oct 1810 in Thurso,he married Helen Mill 13 March 1830 also in Thurso.
This seems an impossible task due to the amount of Mansons in Caithness in particular in Thurso.I thought i had made a connection to a Donald Manson and Jean Gunn but their ages would have meant they had children at a very young age.
Anyone able to help?

Hi Moira, yes i tried them too, they are good i used them to trace the other half of the family lol
So far i think i have spent £18 trying to find William and his wife but no luck.
The William you found is my great great grandfather who later married Dorothy/Dorothea Thompson/Thomson.

I have also tried the LDS site with no luck mainly due to not having an approximate date of birth. They had such large families that it is possible they were older than i am currently estimating  Roll Eyes
I am sort of going by the previous generation for an approximate age if that makes sense.

Thanks for the reply.

Just thought i would let you know, i got a reply from my Dads cousin and she must have the patience of a saint lol

She sent me 10 pages of the Manson family tree, this includes all children, wives, husbands, dates of birhts, marriages and deaths.
I have now added another 300 people to my tree  Shocked

I knew they were a big family but i didnt think there were that many at this rate we will be related to half of Scotland  Tongue

My great grandmother Elizabeth Manson was born 7th February 1860. According to the information I have her mother died in childbirth, and her father was drowned before her birth in Caithness  so she was brought up by her grandparents in Thurso.  It was a very rural area where they spoke Gaelic.

I can't find the names of either Elizabeth's parents or grandparents . Can anyone find her on a Manson family tree , please.

I have some Mansons but not very many.

Christina Manson b. 20 Dec 1777 in Caithness (Independent??) and baptised 26 Dec 1777. She married William Geddes in 1801 in Canisbay and died 1859 in Australia.

Margaret Manson married William Geddes, son of William and Christina in 1823. She died in 1857 and was buried in Canisbay.

Janet Manson married William Geddes, son of William Geddes and Margaret Manson.

Margaret Manson was born 1930 in Thurso, married to Neil Mowat. They moved to Canada before 1955.

I have  copy of a page from the Thurso register that has a William Manson of Pennyland near Thurso witness to the proclamation of marriage of my 3x great grandfather William Shearer in 14 Nov 1795. WS was overseer to the laird Capt James Sinclair of Holburnhead . So I presume WM is a gentleman of standing in the community.
On the same page of proclamations one witness to marriage of Alex Reid , weaver, and Mary Munro is Mr John Manson , saddler and another entry has a Mr Manson of what looks like Borrowston as witness to marriage of Alic Cormack, shoemaker in Forse and Jean Mckay of Borrowston.
