The Cedars? school in Derby
« on: Saturday 23 April 05 02:28 UTC (UK) »

Trying to find out more about a school my mother went to in the 1940's in Derby.  Called something like "the Cedars" - I believe it had two big cedar trees at the entrance way to it.  Does anyone have any memories of this, or can point me in the direction of photos.  Also the exact location of it would be useful as I believe it no longer exists as a school any more.

Do you mean Parkfield Cedars, a senior girls school ?

If so I will look the local papers email address out for you in the morning, they do a weekly 'bygones' pullout in the daily paper,  that way you will be able to find all the info that you want. If it is Parfields then they still have reunions I believe and it was on the Kedleston Road out of Derby City centre before the ring road.

Yes, I'm sure it was Parkfield Cedars.  Would love to have more starting points for information.  You can either PM me or just reply here.  Thanks

Parkfields Cedars was a grammar school for girls that existed in Derby from 1904 - 1975. It was situated on Kedleston Road until 1969, when the school moved to a new building on Mackworth Estate. I attended the school from 1968 -1975. In 1975 it merged with other schools to become a comprehensive. There is a book in the Derbyshire Heritage Series, called "Parkfields Cedars- True to the End", written by one of the old teachers. It contains lots of old photos and info from when the school first opened in 1904. Hope this is of interest.

Thanks for the info.  I've found some photos online and will try to get that book.
