Dumb questions/suggestions?
« on: Saturday 23 April 05 04:52 UTC (UK) »

Be warned that this is from someone who wondered why I was always shown as being on line (because I had to be on line to see that)  Roll Eyes Tongue Huh so I am perfectly prepared to have it pointed out to me (very nicely, as ever) that I am being as thick as two planks. Anyway:

How come I can't actually post a GENERAL (eg) England message? If you click 'general' you just get the listing divided up into counties and I want to ask/tell something that is country but not county specific. (Same with Scotland and Ireland, etc.)

Just as an example, I raised a query about the RFC under Sussex, because that's where the information I had seemed to point. After further investigation (and paying for a bit of help) I have just received in the mail a photocopy of a complete service record, which I thought would be interesting to share generally in a broad sense, vis a vis information given, how I got it etc, which I hope would be of broader interest than just Sussex or Armed Forces readers.

The only place to go seems to be here in the Common Room, but it's not really 'lighter side' stuff (nor any of the other categories). While it is not breathtaking stuff, SOMEBODY might find it useful (and never actually find it by looking up specific categories)!

More importantly, how do all you guys get those cool (moving, even) graphics on your profiles/postings?

Love RootsChat. Might have to make it my home page.

Yeah!  I've done that and found my stuff moved to a specific area - when I thought it should be general - but on the other hand one question I asked in one forum was ansewered very nicely by someone in another forum but I guess she was interested in both!

Yes - I keep trying to post pictures and I am soooo jealous of those moving creatures!  I steal time to play with my computer and do research so I am quite punch drunk after a hour or so - my brain hurts and I can't follow the simple instructions - somehow they escape me.

Q1   If you scroll down any of the "general areas" pertaining to each country .... after the list of county areas you will find a section dedicated to that country in general.

Q2 The animated images are .gif files and you can insert them via your own profile page "Berlin Bob" has done an excellent piece on inserting graphic files which is in the "How to use Rootschat " information section see

As Falkyrn says the posts are at the bottom of the loooonnng list of counties.

The mods will move posts if we think it will get better coverage on a more specifc board.  The General boards aren't as busy and we just want to make sure you get an answer  Grin

All the best,

Sorry just testing!

Thanks to some brilliantly clear instructions from Su I THINK I've posted a picture. This is me writing something just so I can see if it has worked!

For the record, this is my g-grandmother Mary Ann Anyon, born Liverpool 1859, died Feilding 1835. A great old girl, by all accounts!

Cheers,

OOOps !  The photo may be too large for the site Ros.

Try it with an animation, to see if it works.  I followed the instructions Lloydy gave me and it worked first time.

I haven't been able to put a photo up myself either !!!

It's not so much the dimensions of the picture, but the "size" of the file.

If it's bigger than 300kb then it won't get uploaded (which is a bit of a relief really, becasue it could take some people 30 seconds for people to see such an image).

It's usually possible to "save for web" (or a similar option) or apply a "compression setting" to images to make them quite a bit more lean.
