Hi there
Looking for David Hamilton b 1838 in the 1841 or 1851 census?
Would some kind soul let me know the composition of David's family?
By 1856 he was in New Zealand.
Many thanks Hugh from sunny Nelson

I found that David Wilson Hamilton, actually took the name Hambleton! Could you find that record in the 2 early census from Derbyshire (Ashford)?
Cheers Hugh

Many thanks for your look up. Are you able/willing to send me the information that you have provided in a scanned form?
Would appreciate that.
Also, the interesting fact is that in this census he is HAMILTON, but I have him in other times as HAMBLETON. Sadly, a decision to round to the nearest 5 has hit these families too, as I know that the David is born in 1823, but they have him as 15. I guess accuracy in those days wasn't the purpose of the data collection.

Hello Hugh
On your original posting you asked for David Hamilton born 1838 which puts the information that me and bagpuss supplied about right with the ages. Are you now saying you are looking for David Hambleton born 1823?

Me being a dick.
David Wilson Hamilton, born 9 Feb 1823, Ashford in the Water, Derbyshire, England.
I made mental a calculation when we I was looking at a mail, but it has been a tough day at work. Yes, I know, forget the calculation and just call me mental.
David came to NZ in 1856, and married 3 times. My grandmother was a Hamilton before marriage, hence the interest.
Cheers Hugh (was sunny today too! :-) )

Forgot to add, that his surname is "flexible". My grandmoter recalls one of her relys going to the church and talking with a minister, who just happened to have some notes... The minister said that one of the previous encumbants had scribbled something to the effect "...have been away for a while and Mr Hambleton would appear to have changed his name to Hamilton..."
The thot plickens...
Sorry for the confusion.

That's our man... the bugger. His wife is Martha Handley. She tried to have 2 boys in successive years called Handley, but they both died as infants and she died horribly 3 months after the last child was born.
Thanks for confirming that for me. As you can see, his name isn't the same between the 1841 and 1851 census. Makes it difficult to research.
Cheers Hugh
