Hi Jaq: I'm answering your question off the top of my head. As far as areas are concerned the marriage transcripts cover most parishes in Essex. As far as time-frames are concerned some transcripts cover from when the records first started back in 16th or 17th century, but most begin 1754 or thereabouts and finish in 1837 or 1851. If you google 'SEAX' (which is the name of the sword which symbolises Essex) it should take you to the website of Essex Record Office which you can search as a guest. If you type in the search box at ERO 'T/R 203/1' I think you'll be able to pick out the first volume of the transcripts and then, if you have the patience you can go on to T/R 203/2 up to 90!! . ( Make sure you leave one space between the 'R' and the '2'). The search will reveal which transcripts exist but you have to be at ERO to actually be able to read them and they are not copiable.
Like all transcripts they are not as good as the primary source but in my opinion these are exemplary. I have just 'road-tested' these steps and they work. You may be able to experiment with the search by including a placename. My advice to anyone within reasonable travelling distance of Chelmsford is that they and the ERO are well worth a visit. I hope this helps. Let me know if there's any other help you need. Clincher
PS It's not meant to be private. Sorry

Hi, One batch of the transcripts, a marriage index, you are referring to are books on the shelf at the ERO, they do cover the period 1754 to 1851 and I believe are intended to complement Boyd's Marriage Index.  They were compiled by a gentleman named Jack Baxter who with a band of helpers did a great job.  He will do a search of his system for one UK pound per marriage for non Essex Society for Family History members and 50 pence per marriage for members (ESFH membership # must be quoted), he advertises this service in the "Essex Family Historian".  Jack now has an Essex Burial Index (1813 to 1865) under way.  If anyone is interested contact the Essex Society for Family History, Jack has no email address and of course I don't want to put his postal address in full view on a board.
