From Ireland to Scotland

Hi
Can anyone tell me if a family that moved here from ireland about 1870 would have come straite to scotland or if they would have to go via somewhere else .I know there next few children were born in edinburgh


Hope someone can help

Hi, My family also appear to have come straight to Scotland, to work in the jute mills in Dundee and I am still trying to find out where they came from, and to, by ship.  I believe many ships sailed from Ireland to Glasgow (to the port on the Clyde) and from there they could have followed the many railway lines throughout Scotland.  Like you, I would be grateful if anyone can give any more information on this.

Yup, same position for me to, but a bit earlier (1840).  I've found high densities of Irish in Dumfries/Troqueer (where my Fallens settled) and Wigtown.  Portapatrick seemed to be a place many Irish marriages happened similar to Gretna.

Because you never needed to register immigration as such between Ireland and Scotland this seems to be a tough one to unpick.  There are ports up and down the west coast (Annan, Oban, Ayr, Dumfries, Greenock and many more) where ships traded, passengers would have been a sideline.
