One-Half of Dancing-Duo Waltzing Through 'TARDIS'.
|
Dear Martin,
After searching for a Family History Program for many years, we finally settled on 'GENBOX'.
We have been using 'GENBOX', since July 2004, and are very happy with the results. Upgrades are available from the website. There is also a comparison chart of features and capabilities, with five other Family History Programs.
We first purchased a CD copy from 'Gould Genealogy', in South Australia, (www.gould.com.au). They have a link on the 'GENBOX' website (http://www.genbox.com). Other links included are for two U.K. suppliers, and can also be purchased on-line. It certainly is worth a visit to the website.

Martin,
The one certain thing is that you won't get consensus!
I mean ...
Try asking about the good, the bad and the ugly in respect of (say) cars or (say) cameras!!
I use The Master Genealogist - the aristocrat of genie programs in my view but certainly not suited to everyone (re price or simplicity or whatever). But there would likely be general agreement that it is the most flexible genie program there is. And yes, Gould Genealogy (mentioned above) - http://www.gould.com.au - is a stockist and user.
Determine your own specific needs and then try out a few programs on their free trial sites!
Cheers,
JAP

Incidentally, The Master Genealogist (its developer is a company - a family company I think - called Wholly Genes) isn't limited just to importing GEDCOMs - it can import direct from most genie programs i.e. not just transferring the very limited information which comes in a GEDCOM. This is a very big plus if you are considering changing programs.
And it has a limitless (I think!) facility for attaching wills, other documents, photos, multi-media, etc, to individuals recorded in the system.
Not to mention that there are lots of people who print out (for a reasonable fee) trees from this (and other) programs without any need to be sticking together lots of A4 pages e.g. WhollyGenes itself and http://www.sceya.com.au/
Demo of TMG is at: http://www.whollygenes.com/
And there is a Rootsweb TMG list at: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Software/TMG.html
And a TMG list specifically for UK users at: http://www.british-genealogy.com/mailman/listinfo/use-tmg-uk
No, I most certainly have no commercial associations with this program or its developer or associates - this is just information from a satisfied and committed user (and the service backup is fantastic) which I, for one, would have appreciated having a long time ago.
Cheers,
JAP

Hi Martin
I use Family Tree Maker 10 (form v6) for the last 7 years and find it really good. You can import and merge the gedcoms if you wish, add photo texts, slideshow, print out outline trees, detailed tree and the square box chart style. It calculates the relationships of every one entered into FTM, lists how many marriages, surnames people and size of the file.

I use FTM too (V11) - mainly because it is so incredibly simple to use. I don't think it will do the printout you want, but the feature I like is the ability to export any data (and any selection of people) to a spreadsheet. Quite useful for sorting folks.
I use a completely separate chart program to draw family trees because I haven't found any software that does it the way I like to see it without using far too many sheets of paper.

Can I ask what you decide to use instead for chart printing?

Hi Kieran
I use a little charting program called RFFlow. It's similar to word charting (but again very simple to use). Tis all manual input, however, (apart from using cut & paste) so rather time consuming - but I seem to need a top down chart to sort out where everyone fits! When explaining who we are to all the family, they seem to understand this type of chart much better than anything I have found in other software.

Just a word for us Mac users.
I downloaded at a reasonable cost a program called Geditcom. It does everything I want it to do (more or less) and accepts gedcoms from everything else.
Works for me!
