"The Boot" Dane End & "The Station Hotel" Ware
« on: Monday 25 April 05 10:48 UTC (UK) »

Hi Rick
l have just seen your topic on hertfordshire books.
Do you actually have the one on Inns and Public houses?
My mum and dad use to run a pub called The Boot in Dane End, Nr Ware and my grandparents had  The Station Hotel in Ware, l was wondering if these two are in the book and if so l will go out and buy it.
Thanks,
Kim

Hi Kim,

I know you were asking Rick about your ancestors Pubs - but had a look at the book I have - Ware's Past in Pictures - can't see either of them by name - but everytime I look I see another Pub in the pictures - must be at least 50 in the photos.

My Uncle's shop is not mentioned - but it is there - so are a few of the Station - with a rather large building behind - but don't know what is is.

Found a photo of the Golden Boot - but that another shoe shop!!   Grin

Cheers

Hi Rick and Keith

Thank you both for having a look.
Another pub my parents had was The Wagon and Horses in Ware.  l know this has
been knocked down now.  There use to be a house next door to it  that was taken down brick by brick and transported to Wells next the sea.

Hello Kim

The Boot is listed but there are only about 7 lines.  The first reference to it was in 1756 when it had accomodation for one man but no stabling.  In 1761 it was occupied by Daniel BURR.  In 1805 it was purchased by John CRABB, brewer of Hitchin, when part of the building had been separated as a shop.  The first full licence was granted in 1919.

The only mention of the Station Hotel in Ware is that it closed in 1993 and that it was formerly known as the Railway Tavern.  The Waggon and Horses is just mentioned in a list of pubs which were closed from 1962.

There are no photos of any of the pubs I'm afraid. Sad

My grandpartents left the Station Hotel in 1979/80, which l now belive has been knocked down and  flats  have been put in its place.
l will pass the info of The Boot onto my Dad.

Best wishes,
Kim

Hi Kim,

There are a couple of pictures of the Bakery and the home of a Miss May Savage - who had them dismantled and taken to Wells  - doesn't show next door much tho!!

It says the pictures came from an article in "Titbits"

Cheers

Hi Sandie,

Have you seen my write up on the Ware book?

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,35136.0.html

There are a few mentions/pictures of Hope Maltings & Hope House.
Lots of other pictures of Pubs - not sure about Hope Inn.

Another of my "lot" were at the " John Barleycorn"- Market Place, Ware in 1871 - have pinched at few of the photos for my website (with permission of printers!) - have a look.

Cheers
