A very late response, but to the question why is the Southport Visiter so named, rather than Visitor, is because at the time that it was first printed, "visiter" was an accepted alternative spelling for the word (the paper's main purpose was to list the visitors in town... many fashionable folk brought their eligible offspring to Southport for the season to find a good match, so knowing who was in town was important).

The paper kept it's outdated spelling.

Looking at Skirlaugh - there is a chapel today on a junction which has the B1243 in the right direction from it.  Long long shot but maybe the church has lost it's steeple?  And is now a chapel? [Red Arrow]
