Hi Donna
There is in fact a direction sign in the middle of the photograph, but it would need a scan at a higher resolution to try to decypher it. It certainly looks like an English view.
cheers

Thank you very much, Paul,
I'm so happy that it looks like an English view. My 90 year old Mom thinks that the photo was taken in Shropshire... but, her ancestors also come from Cumberland.
Yes indeed, there is a sign that I've tried to magnify with a glass. I'll try to do it via scanner...

Hi,
I'm not a car expert, but didn't the older cars have number plates which identified which town they were from?
I seem to remember using a RAC/AA book as a child on a long journey to do this.
Perhaps if you did the same with the car it may help?

The car at the cross roads seems to be on the correct side of the road for Britain - and isn't that a Mini on the left of the photo?
Also in the enlargement, I see the fanlights open in the windows in the house behind the fence. That is generally an English thing.
Is there a postmark at all?

Hi Donna,
If I read that road sign number think it is B1283 - which is in Durham.
Anyone see a different number?- not quite clear enough for me!
Cheers

My husband thinks I've lost it!
I'm sitting in front of the computer with a magnifying glass and one eye shut trying to read the road sign.....
My money is on B1243 which is at South Skirlaugh, near Kingston on Hull.
Ring any bells?

Should have said - the car heading towards us is an Austin A35 - so nearly certainly England - 1955

Oh Man! I am literally laughing out loud, Indi!
Please tell your hubby that I am forever grateful for anyone that can help me. I've done the magnifying glass thingy... but, I'm past that 40 year old stage... meaning: my eyes go goofy.
I honestly do not have any bells ringing unless they come from Shropshire or Cumberland. AND, even then, you must spell everything out for me... darn newbies!

Yes indeed, Keith! That would be about the time range... I was thinking about 1953?
TY all, Donna

I agree with the B1243
According to the 1:25,000 map South Skirlaugh has a church with a tower - not steeple.
Looking along the B1243 Rise has a steepled church but doesn't seem to have enough houses.
Sigglesthorne = tower Catwick = tower Long Riston = tower
(there aren't many steeples in teh area!)

Looking at Skirlaugh - there is a chapel today on a junction which has the B1243 in the right direction from it. Long long shot but maybe the church has lost it's steeple? And is now a chapel? [Red Arrow]
Pam
Or the road number maybe wrong

Roads in Shropshire begin with 4 or 5
Roads in Cumberland with 5 or 6
So unless we are reading the sign wrongly - don't think the place is in either county!
