I stumbled across an old postcard featuring my a great-great grandfather and family in front of their house.  The picture was taken in northern France probably just after World War 1. I scanned at higher resolution and cropped out the two main ancestors and was delighted to see the little dots actually have some facial features, and look like nice people.

Anyone have any ideas how to get them better?

Thanks, Laverdiere

Hi Lav,
The first thing I would do is crank that scanner up to it's limits, mine goes up to 1200dpi and I will show you what a scan of that resolution can see. but looking at your two photos I'd say you've probably taken it all the way to it's limits. I think if was scanned any higher it would start to blur. So next step, the unSharp filter. It may or may not work, you have to do trial and error to get good results.

The more I look at your high res version I believe that it could be scanned to a higher resolution. If your scanner can't go any higher, I'd try a scanning company, the guys who do reproductions of building plans etc. Their scanner will go beyond 4800dpi, that should do the trick. Some photographic stores have scanners that good as well.

For some reason it wont display the actual picture for me so here is a link to it instead.  i sharpened up the image a couple of times and you can see more detail in their faces now.
