Where can I go now
« on: Thursday 28 April 05 21:11 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I traced my ancestor William Bastard back to the parish of St Nicholas Rochester, but could not find William's baptism there. The entry for William's marriage to Elizabeth Mezzen on 9 Apr 1750 (P306/1/13), states that William was 'of this parish' and the entry for what I presume is his burial in 1766 does not give his age, so there are no clues about where he came from or when he is likely to have been baptised.

I am seeking advice on what might be my next steps - might he from a neighbouring parish or simply never registered - are there any ways I could take this line further back?

Regards, Mark

Hi Mark

You could always try searching some of the nearby parishes for any possible baptism - it gets so much more difficult when you have no idea of his age doesn't it?  These registers are now mostly online:

http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/query/results/?Mode=Search&PathList=%2FZ4a_Medway_Ancestors%2F%0A&SearchWords=&DateList

Were there any other families of that name in the registers which may give a clue as to whether they were related in some way  Huh  It might also be worth enquiring with Medway Archives to see what (if any) settlement examinations/certificates they have - a good resource if they are available and if William came from somewhere else.

Do you know if he was a tradesman?  If so, then records of freemen are another good source - again enquire with the archives.

Best wishes
