I would have thought that unless someone can search the 1851 census for you then your best bet is to get his birth certificate - you will then know his father and also his mother's maiden name.   Not too much to search on 1837online.  I could not see it immediately on FreeBMD.   Or his marriage will give you his father's name too.    Happy hunting!

The GRO bmd indexes are online (pay per view) http://www.1837online.com

These are gradually being transcribed and becoming freely available http://freebmd.rootsweb.com but not yet complete.

To find the marriage you need to look up both bride and groom and ensure that they have the same reference number.

Certificates can be ordered online http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ £7 each.

Good luck

If you come across a William Steven Butler whilst researching this family I would be interested.

He imigrated to New Zealand in 1841 after qualifing as a surgeon. He took passage as the ships surgeon on the Arab that departed Gravesend in 1841.

He married one of the daughters of a Furminger family imigrating from Sussex to New Zealand, they had a duaghter but I have not found anything beyond that time, nor do I know his origins in UK.
