'own account' on census
« on: Sunday 01 May 05 14:56 BST (UK) »

hi
on the 1901 census it shows my grandfather as being a wood turner then next to it shows 'own account' does this mean it was his own business? or something else

Also if anyone has any information on the piano making business in hoxton shoreditch areas or any piano shops in that area it would help me alot,

thanks sooze

Hi sooze,

I think your interpretation is a fair one.  His business may only have been himself only.  If it was any bigger, I would expect to see something like " employing 1 man and 2 boys."

Sooze,

have a look in the Historical Directories at

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/findbylocation.asp

These list the directories by county. You can look up by town, occupation or name, but it may take a bit of time to get into the quickest way to use these. The following map link may also be useful to see what was there in the 1870s.

http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

Hope these are of use
