Hi
My GGG Grandfather  FRANCIS DAVIDSON FORREST born 1823 gave his birthplace as just Northumberland on the 1881 census but by 1891 had improved it to 'Shields'
would he mean North Shields or were both 'Shields' in Northumberland at that time.  I know he married in South Shields in 1849
any advice most welcome

If he said northumberland he meant north shields. South Shields is in County Durham, south of the river, and was also in 1881-91. Having said that, they are very close together and my ancestors who married in South Shields baptised some children in North and some in South Shields!
