William Arthur THURSTON - Brighton
« on: Sunday 01 May 05 20:29 BST (UK) »

Hi Sussex

Am now conceding defeat - I cannot find an entry for the birth of William Arthur Thurston, or any trace of his parents. Angry

According to the 1901, 1891, 1881, and 1871 census he was born in Brighton around 1870.

However, he has never been shown with his birth parents - his father (as shown on William's marriage certificate in 1893) was Samuel - a Hotel Keeper - deceased.  Family story has that William's mother drank herself to death - after spending all the money Shocked

In 1871 he is shown as a visitor aged 1 at 83 Edward Street, Brighton.  Head of the household is one Owen H Shelley, Grocer.

In 1881 he appears as William A Shelley son aged 11 same address.

By 1891 he is William A Thurston - adopted son aged 21 - 83 Edward Street still.

Does anyone have any other ideas I could try?  I do realise that Owen Shelley may not have known exactly where William was born - or when - but assumed William was living in Brighton with his parents at some point.

Will also mention that on William's marriage - the witnesses were John E and Olive E AYLING.  Not sure where these two fit in either - the bride's name was Florence Adkins.

Any help/suggestions gratefully received.

Hi LittleNell

Thanks for this info.  That's more than I've managed to find - think I've been going round and round in circles.

Marriage certificate definitely states Samuel - but I have come across some pretty dodgy writing on a census for another line with a son where it could be either James or Samuel so it might turn out that this is the case.  It might be that William saw James written down badly and read it as Samuel.

Do you think it's possible he was never registered?  Or is it just he isn't on freebmd and ancestry yet?

The hunt is on.... Grin

There is a distinct possibility that a) he was never registered and b) if he was, the entry is not on either FreeBMD or Ancestry (which is a duplicate of the FreeBMD database).

If you think about it, florid/copper-plate handwriting could cause a capital J to be read as S, - am.. are the same  and perhaps the last part tailed off into total confusion! Undecided

Hope you find him.

Thanks again Nell

Do you mind me being really cheeky and asking whether it would be possible to look and see if James and Hannah had any other children?  Only if one of them was registered........ Wink

Hi Helen,

I have looked and there do not seem to be any other children with the same parents who were baptised in Sussex (at least not included on this index).  The marriage is not there either  Sad

No Samuel Thurston either.

It was definitely worth a try though!

Are you admitting defeat before you have looked at the complete birth index?    You only mention FreeBMD and Ancestry.  They are not full coverage by any means so if you have not already done so you should search www.1837online.co.uk for every Thurston child born at that time and he may well be there.   If you cannot do that then write to Brighton register office and ask them to search.  A certificate will cost £7 whichever way you do it

Hi Little Nell

Once again, thanks for your help.   Smiley

Andrea

Thank you too - I have today registered with 1837online and will be searching their records (I had previously thought that ancestry was up to date for the pre 1900s  Roll Eyes )- Keep your fingers crossed - otherwise I shall do as you suggest and write to Brighton register office - I don't think I'll be able to persuade hubby to take a day trip to Brighton just so I can go and 'look up dead people' -his words, not mine Grin
