Hi all
Having a big brick wall with this ancestor. The 1881 census for Lanarkshire states he was from Argyllshire, born about 1826 and a farmer of 100 acres at South Hirst Farm, Shotts. Cannot find him anywhere in Argyllshire but he married in 1862 at Shotts in Lanarkshire to Janet Watson (cannot find her birth). Where can I find the census info for Argyllshire 1841 or 1851 to find which village he was born in?
Many thanks
John Rowley

Hi Mo
His name was Samuel McKechnie born abt 1826 in Argyll, Scotland (is that the town or county?) according to the 1881 census where he was a farmer of 100 acres in Shotts in Lanarkshire. He married in 1862 to Janet Watson in Shotts, she died bef 1868 as he married again to Sarah McInnis (Mcinnes) in Shotts, she was from Morven, Argyllshire. Not been able to find any more info on him, do not know his parents and have no other census info. Any help appreciated as to where to start. Thanks John Rowley

Found the death of Samuel on November 19th 1881 on this he is listed as a farmer aged 48 at time of death, as you said married twice firstly to Janet Watson and then to Sarah McInnes. Cause of death is heart disease for one hour... death was registered by his son William. place of death is South Hirst, Shotts Lanarkshire.
On the marriage Certificate for Samuel and Janet Watson which took place on July 25th 1862 he is listed as an Agricultural labourer, his parents are listed as James McKechnie, Ships Carpenter (deceased) and Margaret McKechnie nee Johnson At the time of the marriage Samuel was 26 years of age and Janet was 27.
Janets parents are listed as William Watson coal miner and Margaret Watson nee Ross
I found a birth of a Samuel McKechnie in 1873 a son to Samuel McKechnie and Sarah McInnes on September 12th 1873 in Shotts Lanarkshire.
Samuel and Sarah married in Barony in Glasgow in 21 March 1868. Sarah's parents are listed as being Duncan McInnes and Catherine McInnes nee McInnes Sarah was 29 at the time of her marriage and Samuel was 33.
Janet McKechnie nee Watson died on January 5th 1868 of a fever for 11 days. At the time of her death both her parents pre-deceased her.
Hope this helps
Mo

John,
Following on from Mo's wonderful information ...
You have no doubt checked out the IGI at FamilySearch? There is a wealth of information there - but not about your brickwall Samuel!
Samuel's marriage to Janet, 1862, Shotts is there and three children to them b Calderhead - William 29 Apr 1863, Margaret Johnston 28 Feb 1865, and James 31 Jan 1867. Also Samuel's marriage to Sarah, 1868, Shotts and three children to them b Shotts - Catharine b 4 Feb 1869, Mary Allan b 26 May 1871, and (as Mo mentioned) Samuel b 12 Sep 1873, Shotts There might be more on ScotlandsPeople? Also what is possibly Janet WATSON's birth in Shotts in 1833, and more about that family. And what is probably the birth of Sarah MCINNIS in 1837 in Morven, Argyll - and what is probably her parents' marriage there in 1829, and what are probably births of siblings.
Now to the 1841 census.
Much of the Argyllshire 1841 is already online at FreeCEN and can be searched at: http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
Sarah MCINNIS seems to be there as Sally. Achlinen, Morvern MCINNIS Duncan, 45, Hand Loom Weaver Catharine, 30 Janet, 9 Ann, 7 Christian, 5 Sally, 3 Mary, 1 All born Argyllshire
But - of course - I can't find Samuel anywhere! The 1841 FreeCEN transcription is not yet complete so perhaps he will turn up in due course? Of course, the family may have moved away from Argyll...
In case the name had been entered under an imaginative spelling, I looked for all people called Samuel in Argyllshire born between 1821 and 1841 (though from Mo's work it appears that Samuel was born between say 1832 and 1836) - there are only 22 but none fits the bill.
I guess you'll need to keep an eye on the Argyll coverage at FreeCEN and check again as new parishes come online (at present it says that just over half of Argyllshire 1841 has been put online).
Regards,
JAP PS: Have you searched for the deaths of James MCKECHNIE and Margaret (JOHNSTON) MCKECHNIE on ScotlandsPeople? Also, the 1871 census is online at ScotlandsPeople.

Hi Jap
Thanks for the 1841 info. Will check out Scotsland people and the 1871 census shortly, still catching up with some other ancestors as well. Currently have 12,063 on Family Tree Maker in the last 7 years so takes some ploughing this field! John Rowley

There is an interesting coincidence of name and trade in the 1881 census for Port Glasgow: Samuel McKechnie, Shipyard Labourer age 30, Mary, wife, age 40 Jemima, daughter, age 13 all born in Ireland living at 8 Custom House Lane, Port Glasgow, Renfrewshire

Hi John
Just read through your posting and the various responses. Can't help with Samuel unfortunately. He doesn't show up at all in Morvern in 1841 and 1861. In fact I cannot find any McKenchie at all in these censuses. What I have found is another spelling of the name which I don't know if you have looked at: Maceachnie. Morvern is part of the Fort William area - Inverness-shire censuses which are included in the following website for the years 1841/61/81: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ked1/ftwillcen.html
The following family is on Page 9 1841 for example:
ARIS SAMALAMAN 2 DONALD MACEACHNIE M 60 COOPER Y ARIS SAMALAMAN 2 ISABELLA MACEACHNIE F 55 Y ARIS SAMALAMAN 2 GEORGE MACEACHNIE M 1 Y ARIS SAMALAMAN 2 ISABELLA MACEACHNIE F 20 SERV.FEMALE Y ARIS SAMALAMAN 2 MARY MACEACHNIE F 15 SERV.FEMALE Y
There are a few other MacEachnie entries but not many.... and no Samuel!
With Sarah MacInnes I agree with JAP's posting and think that Sarah is down as Sally. That listing is the only one with Duncan and Catherine as parents. Have a look on Page 6 1841 for that entry. There a few other Sarah MacInnes but they are either too old or the youngest is shown as age 8 and the parents names don't fit.
Regards.
