I am trying to find informtaion on William Godfrey, born c1810, Colchester (probably St Botolph). I have traced him back as far as the 1861 census, but would like to identify his father, any brothers or sisters, or any others related to him.

1851 Colchester St Botolph has your William Godfrey, b. 1810
With wife (?) Eliza and children.
He is also there in 1841.
But no clue to parents, siblings.
There is a Joseph Godfrey, b. c1790, a Carter, who could possibly be father.
But presumed wife of Joseph (Mary), is too young to be William's mother.

Many thanks indeed for the information, especially regard possible father Joseph. As far as I can tell there appears to be only one Godfrey family line born and beed in the St Botolph parish of Colchester, is there any indication of where Joseph Godfrey lived?
As for William Godfrey's children, I have the names from the 1861 census, with the oldest born 1844, but are there any others born prior to 1844 on the earlier census (maybe William Godfrey, born c1830, and Walter Godfrey born c1833)?
Finally, I have found James Godfrey born c1816, (might be a brother of William), he married but no children recorded in 1861 census, are there any children recorded on an earlier census?

Don't know if this helps but there was a Godfrey family in Coggleshall which is a small village near Colchester in Essex.
Joseph's family was: Joseph, Maud, Alice, Rose, William born 1898, and Earnest and Dorothy.
Joseph jr. stayed behind in Coggleshall and the rest of the family moved down to Bromley, part of the greater London borough now.
I know all this as my husband, Bill, is the son of William born in 1898. We've lived here in the US for the past 45 years. And our nephew Philip Godfrey is now in Queensland, AU with his family.
