« on: Saturday 01 August 09 07:16 UTC (UK) »

How do I find out more information re the above.
He was born in Dollar in 1862, parents John Johnstone and Janet Lyon.

In 1901 he is the Reverend Alexander L Johnston in the Parish of Falkland..assume that's in Fife.

Would like to know where ordained and any other info if possible am not sure where to go for church matters.

Thank you..patvp

Hi

An excellent source of information about ministers of the Established Church of Scotland is Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae, which lists all ministers since the time of the Reformation and is up-dated every 25 years. It is arranged in several volumes according to Synod, and Fife is in Volume 5 along with the Synods of Angus and Mearns.

The entry for Alexander Lyon Johnston in the Parish of Falkland, Fife, reads:

ALEXANDER LYON JOHNSTON, born Selkirk, 18th March 1862, son of John J and Janet Lyon; educated at Dollar Academy and Univ. of Edinburgh; licen. by Presb {presbytery} of Selkirk 13th April 1892; assistant at Cambusnethan; ord {ordained} (assistant and successor) 30th June 1898; died 22nd Oct. 1911. He marr. 23rd Jan. 1900, Anne Smith, daugh. of John Currie, Wishaw, and Jane Thom. Publication - Selected Sermons (private circulation [1912]).

Dollar Academy has its own archivist, so it might be worthwhile contacting her in case his school records are still in existence. The web-site is www.dollaracademy.org
