Hello again, If it is who I think it is (the person who lent it only thinks it's a gggrandmother) can anyone date it? That would help me nail it down Newbie

hi newbie
not like I am a profesional or anything but I went at the picture with blind faith that I could improve it - see what you think
if there is no picture it means I couldn't figure out how to attach it - I'm new at this too

Hi newbie, I was wondering what resolution you are scaning your photo. It has a lot of large pixelated areas. If you could set your scans to 300dpi or better, that should fix the problem. Also you could try scanning it in greyscale and see how that works.

Well, try it at 300 dpi for starters. What program have you got for graphics, photos etc.

Hi Deadants, is that any good, I downloaded Irfanview and tried to resize it, by half. I also scanned it at 600 dpi but I think that might be too big to post here? shall I resize again? thank you for your help, Newbie

There just seems to be something weird going on. unless it's in the photo. It has got large areas of one scale of gray. I have attached your latest photo you just sent. It is at 100% you can see how pixelated it is. I have also attached what my scanner settings would be if I was going to scan it. Have another go. It shouldn't be in the photo as pixelation is a digital information problem.
I have to go now but will get onto it tomorrow

I don't know what I'm doing wrong The photo is sepia /brown coloured. but very thin (I think it may be a copy) stuck on a piece of thick paper/cardboard which is also very old (I'm sure I can see a pair of boots or shoes next to her skirt just back from the edge. My scanner is just a visioneer 4400 usb, first page has this on it Scan Configuration Mode : Grayscale (drop down box, can select Black & white, True Colour etc) Res : 300 dpi (drop down box, varies from 100 dpi to 1200 dpi) Size : 5.43 x 7.27 (variable, Letter, A 4, user defined, autocrop) Image size 3.39mb - this is the size for this actual image.
Does that make sense, I tried to copy to post here as you did but couldn't get it to do it.
Thats it Newbie

Hi Newbie,
my guess is that the 3.39MB is the size of a bitmap file (picture.bmp), which has the most information, and is correspondingly large. When you've scanned the photo, try converting it to .jpg format and look at the size then.
The image has to under 300 KB (See on "Additional Options") Allowed file types: txt, jpg, jpeg, gif, pdf, mpg, png, ged. Maximum attachment size allowed: 300 KB
If it is still too big, try resizing the .bmp file and converting again to .jpg. Beginners / How to Use RootsChat / Adding images to Posting & Profiles
And if that doesn't work, tell us exactly where it is not working, someone here will guide you along.
Good luck, Bob
