Hi  newbie,
    until we can figure out why these photos colour count is so small, we won't be able to  get a satisfactory result.

1.
Optical resolution (the resolution or dots per inch at which the machine can scan): 1200 x 1200 dpi should be the minimum; 2400 x 2400 dpi is better. The more dots or pixels you have, the more you can enlarge the picture without it getting fuzzy or blocky.
2.
Bit depth: The higher the bit depth, the more colors the scanner can recognize. Look for 40-bit or higher.

Thankyou, it's looking so much better, I see what you mean about blocky.  There is not much difference in tone in the photograph, especially the background.
Off to have another go.
