Peter Kuper born circa 1836 Cuxhaven Germany. Married Elizabeth Arscott 1865 Heavitree Devon. on wedding certificate it says he is a mariner. On 1871 census he is lodging near Dartmouth Devon.and is listed as a mariner. Is there any way I could find out when he actually came to this country. Are there any records I could find as regards to him being a mariner. Any help in tracing Peter would be most welcome.
Many thanks.
Lynn

One of the big problems with "Mariners" is that they often jumped ship and stayed at their last port of call, without going through any registration process.
The usual way to is to look at the TNA at Kew, to see if he was naturalised. If he was, (and not everbody was ), then the papers can sometimes provide various useful details.
Look at any topics on this board with "naturalisation" or "alien" in the title. Check out "Sharing useful tips: Germany ..." and "Sharing useful links: Germany ...", also on this board.
Good luck, Bob
