Hi
Been browsing ancestry.com some and did find a few census records but here is my problem. I want to save the entire image to my system for later use if needed. Some of the census records are find you can view them easily and print and save easily. But some like I noticed specifically the 1920 census they use a browser plug in called MrSID Now problem is this if I click on the image when I can see it all and select save as it is always to small to read and if I blow it up then it just becomes distorted. And if I blow it up using this plug in then that seems fine but I can't see entire document left to right and if I then try and save the image I get only the area that is showing which means I lose the other half of the document. Is there a way to be able to save the entire page without having to save it two or 3 or even 4 different times to get entire document???
This is on ancestry.com
TIA

Hi, I think I understand your problem. One way, although a little tedious is to do a print screen of your screen, and paste it into word, then you can cut out the parts of the image you need and stick them back together. To copy the screen to the clipboard, use Ctrl (bottom left on your keyboard) and the Print Screen button (near top right), then open a word document and paste it (or use ctrl-v). Then by double clicking on this image saved, you can edit the area that is shown. Finally, open another copy of Word and copy and paste these edited images to sit next to each other. Yes, I know this is fiddly, but anything can be done with a bit of hacking about. Best Kevan

Hi, Good, can I help in the Essex or Suffolk area? Or recent info , i.e about 1871 to 1901 in most areas. It is a tedious hobby, but has its rewards. Best Kevan

My case been working on the US side tracing the US activities of my G-G-Grandfather who came over here from Scotland in 1886. Trying to gather as much info as I can for when I am ready for the UK end of things. Getting closer by the search though

Hi Scottish2
For when you get to the UK research, ancestry.co.uk does not have the problem with images that you describe on ancestry.com.
Once you've downloaded the viewer, and open an image, there is a toolbar which allows you to zoom, pan, magnify, print and save the (whole) image to disc. You can then manipulate it with Photoshop or similar.
Happy hunting!

Hi Dave, Yes the MSID viewer is a real pain, it is not compatible with any other software and the 1920 image you cannot save to your PC. I spent hours afew months ago with the rotten thing!
I have solved the problem. The only way I know of is to use "Adobe Acrobat" prof, this way you can print to acrobat ( instead of using your printer option) and it will make a PDF for you, which you can save to your pc and read at leasure! It works a treat and I find I use the PDF now for all my census returns as they are so much easier to read from the monitor.
Good luck, Susie

When I bought my current computer the package included a complimentary CDROM for Adobe Photoshop. If you go to http://www.adobe.co.uk/products/photoshopalbum I believe you will be able to download an introductory version (for free I think) which I am sure will be sufficient for this purpose at least.

OK thanks will download it when I get back from my walk.
Do I need to do anything specific to get the documents to get it to open in adobe instead of the program it is currently loading into?
