It seems a lot of records for nineteenth century migrants to Queensland were destroyed in Brisbane floods in the 1890s and later.
However, I'm assuming (hoping?) that the shipping companies made passenger lists at points of embarkation in Britain. Does anyone know if that was the case and, if so, how we can get access to them?
Thank you.

As far as my knowledge goes, you are much more likely to get arrival records rather than departure. I have never found any departure records - but if you do please let us know as I would love to find my irish lass who travelled through Liverpool abt 1850.
Try looking up the Melbourne and NSW records for Qld immigrants. Many travelled through the southern states and appear in their lists.

Hi
The National archives in Kew England hold shipping list for departures and arrivals. You would need to know the Ship and year and month. They are the original records and not on fiche or film like the Australian ones.
Trish, Victoria has shipping lists for departures from Victoria but they are not indexed the same as the arrivals. I believe they are slowly indexing them.
Cheers Genni

Thank you all for your suggestions and Clive for your offer. The National Archives records are, unfortunately, a little late as the ancestors seem to have all been in Australia by 1890. But I've bookmarked the link as there might well be some more distant relations we want to chase up, and a couple of work colleagues could also find it useful.
I noticed the Queensland government is putting more and more information online - a good development for those of us who live a long way from Queensland.
Again, thank you for your posts.

Hi jojosam,
It would probably be worth starting a new topic on this board, asking for a lookup at the Qld state archives. I know there are several Brisbanites out there who do go to the archives occasionally and might be able to get info for you.
You've probably already seen the online index to the passenger microfilms on the Qld archives website but here is the link anyway:

Good luck! Prue
