I'm increasingly thinking that William and Louisa didn't get married  Shocked

Good idea to get one of the kids birth certs to confirm mum's maiden name.
It will save time and money in the long run and save you barking up the wrong tree.

Come back to us with the info on the cert when you get it(they're taking less than a week at the moment.I got one today that I'd ordered last Weds, and that's with the bank holiday)

Hi,
I'm Lindsay, Grandson of William Thomas Smith b.1892, and Winifred Olive 'Olley'.   Son of Clement Smith.
I to am having the same issue with was it 'Thomas' as shown on my grandfathers Wedding Cert. or James as is in the census's.
James/Thomas, was married to Maria in the census of 1881, Maud in 1901 and Maria again in 1911.   All having the same children.   I contend that the name 'Maud' has been mis-read and the 'u' should have been read as 'ri' and the 'd' an 'a'.   Your thought on this please ?, also any further info on James/Thomas ?

Regards
Lindsay

I'm not sure about his place of birth?!

If I have the right James & Maria in 1911, he says he was born in Wales?!

I think we established a while back that his wife had completed the form and entered his POB as West Kensington WALES  Roll Eyes

I think that's probably near enough to be Fulham as in the OP's original post  Grin

Apologies! Coming late to this thread!

1901 census says born Kentish Town - and his wife is definitely Maris, but transcribed as Maud.

So is the birth in Poplar, September 1870, of Thomas Olley any good?

Hi,
We now believ that Thomas James Olley used his 'offical' name Thomas on documents etc., but day to day was James.
He appears on the electrol roll, living at 19 Elm Street, Finsbury, with Maria in 1918.
Same address with Maria & Victor in 1923, 1924 & 1926.
In 1927 only Victor appears to be living there.

Hi Lindsay

I've found him in the electoral rolls up to 1937, and then on FreeBMD there is a death of a James T Olley. Also, I found Maria Olley in the electoral rolls up until 1959 and on FreeBMD there is a death of a Maud Olley in 1959.

I have ordered both death certificates and should receive them tomorrow Smiley

I've finally received both certificates, and I believe that James T Olley who died in 1937 is in fact the right one, but unfortunately Maud isn't!

Hi Kirsty,
Just spoken to my dad, he recollects being told Thomas James OLLEY did in fact die around 1937.
Also some short stories about Thomas George, that I have placed on his profile page.
