Hi Willow

Thanks for that info. I'll assimilate it all when I've passed on all I've got, and we can see what gaps there are (as if we don't know)

Hi Willow and RachelK

Sorry about break in transmission - grandchildren to stay!

Elizabeth Owen

b about 1811
bap possibly 10.3.1811 at Milverton, Somerset to James Owen and Sarah (nee Chorley)
brothers and sisters Mary, Sarah, John, George, Charlotte (if this family)

M to George Meers (never found) but presumably 1831ish. Where? Could be Som, Lancs (as James was bap there, say the censuses. Could be WMids?
George was presumably dead by 1848, since Elizabeth then married John Taylor at St Peters W'ton, 29.9.1848 (July/Sep 48 W'ton XVII 366). Residence at marr was Bilston St. John Taylor was bach, full age, furnaceman of Bilston St. Father John Taylor, dead. Wit Caroline Taylor and clerk. Father James Owen was by then dead also.

51 census Blackbrook
61 8 Bennetts Fold with James
71 5 Barracks Pountney St with Selina.  All posted earlier.

Not found in 1841, but prob in W'ton then.

Not found after 1871

Profession - laundress, general servant.

James Owen marr Sarah Chorley at Milverton 11.5.1802. Sketchy details of family beyond that.

I don't think I can be sure of the Milverton connection as Eliz's censuses variously give birth at Herefordshire, Redinton somerset, Reddington Devon. Raddington is a tiny village on the Som/Devon border near Wiveliscombe. Milverton is a town nearby.

There may be a few more snippets from the past, but not many. Do you want the line from Ellen down to me?

Hiya Fencewolf

I think that the Raddington info might be correct I usually find if they give the same place of birth on a couple of the census its usually right (despite the odd spellings) I found this interesting link on Appleton http://homepage.ntlworld.com/brianh.taylor/appleton_village.htm but there doesn't seem to be any link to mining there so what were George and Elizabeth doing there? We really really need to find James' christening details to tie this one down. I've stuck a post up requesting someone looks in the archives but its a long shot

Hi Willow and RachelK

Do you want the Henry Simkiss family censuses for 1841 and 1851? I have them, if you don't.

Hi Willow

re Simkiss

1851 Pool Lane
Henry Simkiss     H M 43  Carpenter        W'ton
Harriet                W M 43                         London
Charles                       14  Iron Brazier     W'ton
Richard                        13 Iron Brazier      W'ton
Thomas                         8                          W'ton
Henry                            6                          W'ton

1841 Waterloo Place
Henry Simkiss     30 Joiner J (presum journeyman)  Yes (in county)
Harriet                30                                                  Yes
Isabella                8                                                  Yes
Jemima                 6                                                  Yes
and now it was not clear to me whether this was the same family or not
Richard Samuel     6                                                   Yes
Richard                  2                                                   Yes

The Richard 2 suggests it does belong, but the RS is a bit odd. I wonder if Samuel is surname.

Hiya Fencewolf

Surely Richard Samuel should be Charles? It does seem like the right family because of Jemima and Isabella being there

Hi Willow

Some limited progress!

Bap of Selina Mayers (!) 31.10.1836 at St Peters W'ton

Not sure it leads anywhere though. I still can't find Ellen, James , George or Elizabeth.

Hiya Fencewolf

Thanx for that - at least if we know Selina was baptised at St Peters its a lead where to look for the others. I'll try and get up the archive office and have a look in the near future

I can't remember if I gave you this link http://www.pbenyon1.plus.com/PR_Index.html someone has very kindly transcribed the parish records including Milverton where Sarah Chorley was born. As far as I can tell her parents were Isaac and Hannah. If you want all the details to save you a search let me know

Hi Willow

Thanks for your post. I did have all 3 marriages, and I thought I'd given them to you. There are 2 errors in the John Barratt/Ellen Meers one ( my gt-grandparents, I have the certificate). He is a latchmaker, not a watchmaker. The first witness is James Meers, not Jacob.

However, the Eliza Mayers bap is new to me, and very likely to belong, I think. It suggests that George was still alive in 1838 at least. We know he dead by 1848. However, at a quick look on Ancestry, I still can't find a convincing set of Meers in 1841, nor a convincing death for Geo 1838/48. I do think Geo/Eliz ans the miner is convincing enough even tho the surname is dubiously spelt.

I haven't used freereg, but it's obviously worth a go!

You never know, this could bring the breakthrough. All the best

Hiya Fencewolf

Yes I have looked and cant find a death for George either. Had people on Rootschat searching for them in the 41 census and no one can find them either. I think they managed to dodge the enumerator on that night

I will have to look and see what I can find on Eliza although I suspect she died young but you never know

I am finding FreeREG pretty good - luckily there are quite a few of the Wolverhampton registries transcribed and when they are further along it will be a really useful database

I had guessed that Jacob was James. I getting used to the variations on the Mears surname - though Mayers is still a bit far out there as you can go

Take care

Hi Willow

Are you interested in the Boffys? Trying to trace them in the vain hope that they lead to George Meers, I found that Harriet (later Meers) was apparently called Woodward at birth and was only Hannah's half sister presumably. Reference 1841 census for worthington, Leics
James Boffey 30
Hannah do 30
Samuel Woodward 12
Rebecca do do 11
Harriet do 8
George Boffey 6
Ann do 4
John do 2

You have the 51 census I think (Halllfields, Bilston)
, missing Harriet
but Harriet is at Pinfold St Bilston
servant to George Edwards, as
Harriet Woodward U 18 b Swadlincote (which is near Gresley and Newhall)

I can find a possible marr for Harriet in 1856 to Samuel Harnold, but that's speculation.

Do you know more?
