Well I'm guessing that was not our James then. After all, we were wrong about the Boffy's, so we're not necessarily going to be lucky enough to find James on the IGI.
James never made any mention of being born in Leek, Stafford anyway. He could have been born anywhere, but on at least 2 census he states Lancashire. Why he says Appleton (which is in Cheshire) I don't know, but in reality it's possible even he didn't know where he was born. Maybe he likes being awkward.
An 1851 look up might prove very useful, hope someone replies to your request!

I can help! And what's more the Mears are my ancestors (well Elizabeth Taylor is). The clues are James Mears's sisters. They are Ellen and Selina. The witnesses to Ellen's marriage were James Meers and Elizabeth Taylor (1854). Marriage 1848 in W'ton of John Taylor and Elizabeth Mears, widow , father James Owen . Just in case of doubt, Ellen had a grandda with Christian names Nellie Owen. John Whitehouse marr Selina Meers 1853 W'ton and in 1871 census , as well as children there is Elizabeth Taylor mother in law, widow born SOMERSET, REDINTON (which turns out to be Raddington). James Miers marr Jemima Simkiss 1855 W'ton. Mary Ann Myers (how many spellings are there?)d of J and J was bap 1859 W'ton. I do have more but I'm not sure what you're interested in. I have never found baps for James Ellen or Selina. Boffey I can't help with. I know the father of J E and S was George (miner) from Ellen's marr cert, but I can't trace him either. Incidentally this was all done 20 years ago and I'm only just picking up the threads. Found this site by pure accident.

Willow ---I'll reply properly soon, but probably in stages, cos there's quite a bit, and since it was all done pre-internet, it needs culling from my ample looseleaf files. Incidentally, can I assume that your interest is in James mainly? You might like for now James in 1851! You'd probably never find him.
Blackbrook, W'ton Elizabeth Taylor H W 39 Laundress Devon, Reddington (3rd county!!!!!) James TAYLOR!!!!! S U 19 Labourer W'ton!!!! Clena Taylor D U 15 W'ton John Taylor S U 1 W'ton
Ellen is elsewhere, possibly at 2 Flags, W'ton in the family of George Fieldhouse
Ellen Mairs Servant U 18 General servant W'ton
Did you know of George (next generation, miner)? Do you know any more?
My starting point for all this was the original marr cert of Ellen (1854), which I have.

Hi Fencewolf,
This is great, thanks for your help. Willow and myself descend from Mary Ann Mears (James' daughter) and hadn't got very far, as at first we thought Mary's mother was Harriet Boffey when in fact James had been widowed and remarried and her mother was Jemima Simkiss.
We hadn't found the names of James' parents or siblings at all. Looking forward to hearing more. My tree is on genes reunited if you want to view it.

Hi Willow and RachelK
I never found the marr of George Meers and Elizabeth Owen (presumably 1830ish) Could be W'ton, or Raddington, or Appleton or anywhere with mines (that hardly narrows it down). Nor have I ever found baps for James Ellen or Selina though at least 2 of these should be in W'ton. Nor George's death (must be between 1836ish and 1848). It could be the spellings that defeated me.

Hi Willow and RachelK
Next instalment re Ellen Meers, my gt grandmother
Born about 1834 probably W'ton, but never found Parents George Meers, Elizabeth Owen (later Taylor)
1841 census - not found 1851 census - possibly with Geo Fieldhouse, as earlier posting
marr 5.6.1854 at St Marks W'ton, aged 20, spinster of Salop St, father George Meers , miner (in fact he must be dead, as Eliz has by the remarried) to John Barratt ,full age, bachelor of Salop St, latchmaker, father William Barratt, ribbon maker. Witnesses James Meers, Elizabeth Taylor. All 4 signed with a X.
1861 census 4 Bennetts Fold John Barratt 31 Whitesmith Coventry Ellen 27 Screwmaker W'ton Saran 6 W'ton Elizabeth 4 W'ton Charlotte 1 W'ton (my Grandma)
1871 census 6 Bennetts Fold John Barratt 41 Whitesmith Forrlsill, Warws (actually Foleshill) Elenor 37 W'ton Sarah 16 Elizabeth 14 Charlotte 12 John 10 Eliza 7 Eleanor 4 (Lena) Helen 1 (Ellen)------all W'ton
1881 census St John's Square ----darn it, it's in the files at the bottom of the airing cupboard and I can't get at it at present, but John, Ellen Elizabeth, John, Eliza, Lena, Ellen, Amy and Alfred are there.
Ellen died Apr/Jun 1881 W'ton 6b 295. Buried W'ton cem Grave 4364 on 9.6.1881.
I remember the house in St John's Square as a child, and I remember Liza and John junior. The whitesmith latchmaker business became quite successful, and there are lots of references in directories.
Children of John and Ellenare Sarah b 4 7 1854 Elizabeth b 29.11. 1856 Charlotte b 24.8.1859 John b 11.9.1861 Eliza b 5,2,1864 Lena b Oct 1866 Ellen b 12.5.1869 Henry b 4.4.1872 Amy b 22.9.1877 Alfred b 22.4.1880 Hannah bap 20.6.1875 and I know plenty more about them if you are interested.
On another subject, I have an alternative possible bap for EO, which is 10.3.1811 at Milverton, Som, which is close to Raddington, in fact the nearest town.
More later
