I have managed to trace my mothers family and am anxious to trace my fathers family now but I have as yet no place to start. I need information on Philipv Reaney, born about 1922 and Percy Reaney, born probably around the turn of the century. I know that in 1944 they were living on Oldham road in Ashton-Under-Lyne. Any help at all would be appreciated. L. Riley e-mail address removed to prevent 'spamming' - please use the 'private message' facility. Global Moderator

Hi Primrose
If you have traced your mothers side of the family - you should have the marriage certificate of your Mum & Dad which will give you the name of your grandfather on your dads side (Grooms Father) - I presume this is the Percy Reaney mentioned. As dad was born in 1922, its odds on that your grandfather may be on the 1901 census as a small boy. Do you know the name of Percy's wife (your grandmother - if so, you can start looking for a marriage from 1922 backwards for a Percy and ?; thus getting his age from the marriage certificate and then having a more concrete date of birth for him
Saying that, I will have a quick look on the 1901 to see if I can spot any likely Percy Reaney's.

Thank you for your advice, I do appreciate it. Unfortunately I am in Virginia and cannot get to the records, also while I was born in Ashton-Under-Lyne my parents were both married and divorced, in Belize and I have been unable to get records. I am going on my mother's perhaps, faulty memory. She is sure that my grandfathers name was Percy and thinks my grandmother's name was Beatrice. She also remembers my Aunt Marian and two cousins named Roger and Paul, but other than that she can't help me much. All family records were lost in a fire about 15 years ago. Fortunately, I am still in contact with members on her side of the family, so tracing that line was relatively simple. I will keep trying and hope that I can find the 1901 census somewhere online. Who knows, I might stumble across something completely by accident. As you probably know, that happens alot in genealogy. Perhaps, Roger or Paul will decide to trace their lineage.

With reference to Percy Reaney. I can find no Percy Reaney in Ashton-Under-Lyne in 1901, but, there are several Percy Reaney's listed on the 1901 census index, living in Sheffield. There is one aged 1, another aged 5, both living at Ecclesall, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Perhaps some kind person on this forum could look this up for you? You could try posting a request, you never know?! Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of that particular census, so I can not help further at the moment.
As regards your mothers memory, her recalling a Marion (Reaney?). There was a Marion Reaney born in Ashton-Under-Lyne in 1909. Also an Edward Reaney, born 1911. This does indicate that the Reaney family were living in the Ashton area.

Thank you Rose but I have actually found those. Marian was my aunt and Edward my uncle. I found a site called genesreunited and discovered that someone else was researching the same names. Turned out to be Edwards grandson and my 2nd??? cousin. We are now emailing. If you haven't found this site yet, I really reccomend it. Costs a small fee but is very easy to use. Hope you have good luck to. Primrose
