Hi adief,
I have an extracted record on IGI of Thomas Moffat marrying Mary Dawson 29 Mar 1823 Inveresk with Musselburgh, Midlothian, Scotland On the 1841 census at Eskside, Musselburgh
Thomas Moffat b 30 abt 1811 Midlothian Occ Merchant La?? (could be 30 - 34) Mary Moffat 35 b 1806 Midlothian (could be 35 -39) Thomas Moffat 16 b 1825 Midlothian David Moffat 12 b 1829 Midlothian John Moffat 11 b 1830 Midlothian Alison Moffat 10 b 1831 Midlothian James Moffat 7 b 1834 Midlothian Mary Moffat 6 b 1835 Midlothian Plus 2 servants.
Still have problems with Thomas's age, are you sure you got correct death certificate? The ages and names in 1841 and 1851 tie in very nicely.
Tom

Just re-looked at the 1841 census and I see the confusion:
Parish of Inveresk, Eskside:
Moffat, Thomas, m, 50, tannery merchant, b. Midlothian Moffat, Mary, f, 35, b.Mid Moffat, Thomas, m, 16, b. Mid Moffat, David, m, 12, b. Mid Moffat, John, m, 11, b. Mid Moffat, Alison, f, 10, b. Mid Moffat, Mary, f, 6, b. Mid Moffat, James, m, 7, b. Mid Moffat, William, m, 1, b. Mid Williams, Elizabeth, f, 20, servant, b. Mid Mitchell, Mary, f, 18, servant. b. Mid
Then the 1851: Parish of Inveresk, Eskside:
Moffat, Thomas, m, HD, 43, Tanner & Currier, Master, b. Inveresk Moffat, Mary, f, WI, 47, b. Inveresk Moffat, John, m, So, 21, Currier j'nyman, b. Inveresk Moffat, Alison, f, DA, 19, b. Inveresk Moffat, James, m, SO, 17, Currier j'nyman. b. Inveresk Moffat, Mary, f, DA, 15, b. Inveresk Moffat, William W. m, SO, 11, scholar, b. Inveresk Campbell, Jane, f, SV, U, 23, servant, b. PER, Logierait
1861: Parish of Inveresk, High St. Musselburgh:
Moffat, Mary, f, HD, W, 56, Landed propr'x. b. STI. Larbert Moffat, Alice, f, DA, U, 28, b. Musselburgh Moffat, Mary, f, DA, U, 25, b. Musselburgh Moffat, William, m, SO, U, 21, Tanner, b. Musselburgh Fairburn, Agnes, f, SV, U, 20, servant, b. FIF, Pitenweem
So there must have been a mistake somewhere as to Thomas's real birth date, if he was 50 in 1841 he should have been 60 in 1851 and and also Mary wasn't born in Inveresk but in Stirling.

Sorry to confuse you, but I got my 1851 census info from the LFHS CD. Looking at the same family on Freecen for 1851 I see Thomas is aged 63 yrs. Therefore the mistake seems to be with the CD transcription.

Hi Elaine,
Yes, that looks likely, that he should have been 53 in 1841, 63 in 1851 and 73 in 1861. Do you think that Thomas may have been married before to a Mary from Stirling, age difference of 16 years between him and Inversk Mary?
Sorry to confuse things again
Tom

Hi Tom,
I did think about that as the age difference was so much, but the kids are in the right age group for Mary to be their mother. I spent a couple of hours last night looking around to see what I could find which wasn't much but I did find a David Moffat also a currier who may have been Thomas's father or brother. Would you like the info?
