Roxburgh parish Church
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 13:09 UTC (UK) »

I have been told that Roxburgh ceased to exsist years ago is this true. otherwise does anyone know its history.  My ancestors where born there. I would also like to know where I can get a list of burial inscriptions for Roxburgh parish churchs during the 18th and 19th century. Im trying to find my ggggggrandfathers details.  He was William Muire born 1770. Had a son William Muire born 1796 in Roxburgh, married Mary ann Winter.

Hello,

It is correct that little remains of the mediaeval castle of Roxburgh, once a very important place. However, there is still a village and parish of that name, and records do survive. The Roxburgh Old Parish Register includes burials from 1783-1812 - these records are not yet indexed or available online, but can be searched by anyone with access to the Parish Registers on microfilm. There are also published gravestone inscriptions for the parish.

Hope this helps,

Emma

There is a lot of info about Old Roxburgh in History of the Borders by Alistair Moffatt . Time Team also excavated parts of the old village and you can see the results on their website .
