Breden & Streeter
« on: Thursday 05 May 05 20:12 UTC (UK) »

Hi I have just started to research my family tree, and I am looking for any information on the Breden family.

I have 1871 census details from Charlwood in Surrey with a James Breden who was born in Balcombe Sussex, James was aged 56 and a widower, living with his son Thomas Breden aged 22 born in Charlwood.

I would also like any info on Rebecca Streeter born 1844 in Horsham Sussex who married William Breden from Charlwood.

As I have said I have only just started to research so I do not have much to go on, the smallest of details would be greatley appreciated.

Hi Fiona,

It is quite likely that there is a connection to my family somewhere along the line.

My ancestor Thomas Breden married Elizabeth Short in 1770, and they had 5 sons, Charles (born 1772), Craven (1775), Henry (1781), William (1784) and Joseph (1789).

Charles and Craven may have been born in East Grinstead prior to the removal of Thomas to Balcombe under Poor Law removal orders. The other three children were all born in Balcombe.

It is possible (probable?) that your James Breden is the son of one of these five. All of them would be the right age for them to father a son in 1815.

I think there were quite a few Bredens in Balcombe, so if your Thomas was not a direct relation to any of these, I would guess that he was at least a first or second cousin.

Good luck with the hunting.

I have the 1851 census transcription for Balcombe and there are various members of the Breden family there if you need to flesh out your tree at a future date.   Sarah 58 widow, pauper b Ardingly is the oldest.    Otherwise it is William 36 and family.

Thanks everyone for your replies,

I will do more research and let you know if I find any ties to the names you have mentioned.
Might take me a while as I do not have much free time, but I post a message when I find out more.

Thanks again for the info, much appreciated.

Hi Fiona,
I'm new to this site and noticed the name Streeter in connection with you. I'm trying to trace the wife of William Streeter (Charlotte Pelham/?) married in Mountfield E. Sussex 19.10.1826. I can't seem to find anything about her before the marriage. Any help much appreciated
