Chapmans in Horncastle
« on: Friday 06 May 05 16:57 BST (UK) »

I have Chapmans in Horncastle, namely....
William b  c1794, who married Mehetabel (Woodhouse) b 1800.  They married in 1818 in Horncastle.  They had children...
Ann
Mary Ann
Eliza (beth)
William
Sophia, who died age 2/3
Henry

Is anyone researching the same family please, as i cannot find Williams parents?
William was a Bootmaker, as was  his youngest son Henry who is my great grandfather.

Hope someone on here can help me,
Thanks

I've found them on 1851 census 2107/266

Far St, Horncastle
William 60 Shoemaker (journeyman)
Mehetabel 52
William 16 Shoemaker App
Henry 10
George Elham (ldgr) 24 brickmaking journeyman
Eliza Elham 20 (wife)
John Elham 1
All born Horncastle.

Perhaps this was him on IGI:

WILLIAM CHAPMAN

Birth:  21 OCT 1791

Christening:  18 NOV 1791   Horncastle, Lincoln, England

Parents:
  Father:  JOHN CHAPMAN  Family
  Mother:  ANN

Hi and thanks for sending me the info,   but i already had all this. I found the family on the 1841, 1851, 1861, census.

The problem i really have is finding Williams parents.  They may be John and Ann, but i need further proof.

I will keep searching.  If you turn up anything else to do with the family i would appreciate it. I do not know when William died either.
Many thanks once again for taking the trouble to get back to me.

You will never be able to prove CONCLUSIVELY who his parents were*.  All you can do is try and eliminate all the alternatives.

I sure you know that before 1837, marriages didn't give fathers' names, so you will get no help from that.

I assume that he gives "Horncastle" as his place of birth on all censuses, so you have to believe that he was born there or only a short distance from the town.  All you can do is search every baptism register within 5 miles of the place and, if you find no other baptism around the right time, you have to make the decision whether or not to accept the 1891 Horncastle one.

When a name is fairly common, such as Chapman in Horncastle, positive connections are often impossible.  I think you need to construct trees for all the Chapmans that you can find there in censuses using IGI/registers to try and find out where/who they came from.  Either you WILL find enough to reach your acceptance level, or you won't.

As the erstwhile eminent detective Sherlock Holmes once said "When you have eliminated the impossible whatever remains, however improbable, is the solution."

*Unless you can find a will that says "..... my son William and his wife Mehetabel .....".
