Hi Ange,
Does your 1841 Census cover the whole of Cumberland? If it does, could you check again for my Hugh or John Shields in Carlisle, please.
John would have been about 9. Father Hugh, mother unknown.
There was a Hugh living at 157 Backhouses Walk, Old Factory, Carlisle in 1851 (Carlisle Part 7).
I hope the census is indexed and I'm not asking too much! Thanks, Seattle

Hi Ange,
Thanks so much for checking out the Hugh Shields in Carlisle. I'm afraid I don't think he's the right one. Could I impose upon you to check for any other Hugh's in Cumberland? Don't know if this census lists occupations, but he was said to be a basket maker on his son, John's, marriage certificate. Or for a John Shields about 9 years old?
I do appreciate it! Seattle

Hi Seattle, It would take a very long time to check the whole of Cumberland for this family as there is no index, so I would have to look at each page individually. You have to remember that Hugh could have changed his occupation between this census & the next. Do you have John's date of birth or are you getting his age from his marriage certificate/census returns? Ange

Hi Ange,
I knew it would be a long shot, but I was hoping the census would be indexed. I don't have John's birthdate, unfortunately. The census records and his marriage certificate are consistant throughout, that he was born in Wigton 1832/33. That's the sum total of what I know, except that his father was Hugh. He was born too early for the civil registration, so I'll now try to order the film from the LDS Family History Centre. I live in the boonies, so it will take weeks, but I know patience is the name of the game with this crazy obsession!
All the best, Sharon
