Birthplace of Thomas HAKES born c 1753
« on: Sunday 15 November 09 14:36 UTC (UK) »

Please, does anyone know where Thomas HAKES came from?

Thomas married Elizabeth LEBATT in Piddington on 16th February 1780 and they lived in Piddington from then on as far as I can tell.   Elizabeth was baptised in Piddington but Thomas was not and I can't see any likely parents for him there either.   When Thomas was buried at Piddington on 27th June 1828 he was 75 years old, making his date of birth c 1753 if my arithmetic is correct.

If anyone can fill in the blank and thus help me go back another generation I shall be extremely grateful.

Hi Diana ...

Checking the Northants. Marriage Index (1700-1837), the only likely HAKE(S) marriage before 1755 took place at Woodford Halse in 1743 (the groom was from Mixbury).

These three places - WH, Piddington and Mixbury - form a rough triangle, with each side approx. 20 miles.

I have access to the WH parish register fiches at my local library, and would be happy to see if there's any sign of Thomas's baptism there.

Hi Pennie

Thank you for your reply and also the kind offer of a look-up at your local library.   I will gladly take you up on it!

There's no particular rush, so please don't put yourself out, just whenever is most convenient.

Best wishes,

Diana

Hi Diana ...

Unfortunately, my visit to the library was not terribly productive!  I found the 1743 HAKES marriage in the Woodford Halse registers, as follows:

John HAKES of Mixbury and Mary HARRIS otp were married by Banns Nov. 3rd

However,  I found no HAKES baptisms at WH between 1744 and 1756.  I also checked the burials for the first five years after John and Mary's marriage (to see if either of them had died in the parish) but there was nothing.

It would seem that they moved away from the parish after their marriage, which would seem to be confirmed by the IGI which has the following baptisms at Mixbury:

1744 - Thomas, s. John and Mary
1746 - William, s. John and Mary
1748 - John, s. John
1752 - George, s. John

But no sign of Thomas, although it may be worth checking the surrounding areas (the 1744 Thomas could have died in infancy and had an older brother named for him).

On the IGI there's a Thomas HAKES baptised at Stepney (London) in 1752 (different parents).  He's the only HAKES baptised in the parish around that time - have you checked him out?

Sorry I couldn't bring you better news!

Hi Pennie

I am very grateful that you went to all that trouble for me.   It's the right name, even if it isn't the right person, so it looks as if it would be worth my while to investigate Mixbury and the parishes between it and Piddington.

Thank you very much indeed for your help.

Hi Diana ...

Just wondering if you've noticed Wozzle's posting on the Look Ups section of this board, offering birth/baptisms from 1751?

May be a way of locating Thomas!

HI Diana  Smiley

As you are aware a lot of us here have the same cd roms as Wozzle
from Alan Clarke.

There is no baptism noted except those Pennie noted.

As the offer was made gratefully by Pennie it was not polite
to list  in-between time.

Doing so now so time is not wasted.

Hi Sandy

Nice to hear from you! again   Our posts crossed, so I have already put in my request to Wozzle.   I will put in another post to ask him not to bother.

Thank you for letting me know that there is no baptism for Thomas on the CDs.   He is playing hard to get!   Do you know if there are any parishes that aren't covered?

I have been so busy with research on other branches of my tree that the HAKES side has got rather neglected, but I check the Northampton boards every few days.   I will have to find the time for another trip to the Record Office soon....

Take care,

Diana

Hi Sandy

Thank you for getting back to me with that link.   I have just had a look and sadly every parish has been covered, so I reckon I may have hit the proverbial brick wall.

I will turn my attentions to the Mixbury area and maybe also Stepney, as suggested by Pennie, but I think that the farther away any baptism took place the slimmer my chances of making a definite connection.   My best hope is that Thomas's age at death was wrong and I can find him being baptised in the vicinity of Piddington just before 1851.   I will have to keep my fingers tightly crossed.

All the best,

Diana

Hi again Diana.

As Alan and Marilyn's cd roms are Church of England,
it is still possible to try Non-conformists records.

Some of my own ancestors baptised in both Religions.

I will P.M. the link.
