Varley WHITEHEAD - Burnley area
« on: Sunday 08 May 05 07:15 UTC (UK) »

Hi
Am searching for ancestors of Varley Whitehead and
would much appreciate a look-up for him in the Habergham Eaves area of Burnley.

Varley was a pig breeder and slaughterer whose son, John Whitehead, a druggists's assistant married Hannah HANKS, servant, on 27/7/1878 at St Andrews, Burnley.

Its quite possible that Varley married at least twice: to Parthenia HARTLEY and then to Hannah/Ann SPENCER.
An extract from the Family Grave Register at Burnley Cemetery gives a burial for a Varley Whitehead, aged 46, 21/11/1950, but I am unsure as to who this is.
There appears to have been up to three Varleys in this family.

The 1901 census shows a Varley Whitehead age 70 born in Burnley living in Featherstone Yorkshire with the Burns family.

The same census shows a Varley Whitehead age 39, born Burnley living in Oldham with his wife Elizabeth age 40, Son Robert V age 10 and daug Hilda B age one.

But I can't find them in 1891.

do you have any dob's for varley or john whitehead

habergham eaves covered a large area of burnley in the 1800's

Fran

PS i used to live in the habergham eaves part of burnley so i find it fascinating when i look things up for this area because i recognize all the streets and know exactly where they were

unfortunately progress - its nearly all gone now for a motorway

Hi Fran

Its nice to know that there's someone who knows the area.
Being based down south I've never been and all the old maps of the late 1800's are very "rural". Anyway........
One of the problems appears to be that you would think that Varley is an uncommon name. Alas, in this family there are a few!

I have the following:

Varley Whitehead born 1806 married Hannah Spencer born 1813. I don't have a wedding date for them but their first child might have been Ellen born 1833.
They had a son, Varley  born 1839 who married Elizabeth Edmonson 17/8/1861.
Varley and Elizabeth had a son, Varley born 1862.
There is another Varley, born 1841 who I think was the son of the first Varley above, by a second wife Parthenia Hartley whom he married on 24/11/1823. Their son Joseph, born 1824 who married Emma Johnson on 11/10/1852 also had a son Varley born 1855.
In short I've been Varleyed!

Much of this has come from Census and Parish records kindly supplied by a contact at the Lancs. Family History Society but I still don't have a conclusive connection to my people.
The farthest I can go is to claim John Whitehead born 1851? as my Ggrandfather who married Hannah Hanks in July 1878. The certificate gives Varley as his father, a butcher.

Hi Fran

To clarify, my G grandfather was John Whitehead who is to be found in the 1881 Census living at 40 Hufling Lane, Habergham Eaves with Hannah his wife and children, Gertruda, Eliza, John William-my grandfather- and Ann, John's mother. Please advise if you think I can help further.

Regards Mike.
